If you are looking for a sofa, the options are endless. Designs have come a long way – as have the materials they are made of.
Two of the most popular fabrics for sofas today are leather and microfiber. While choosing one over the other remains a personal choice, the reasons you base it on will depend on the type of use you plan to put the couch to.
If you are looking for a sofa that you will enjoy using every day, microfiber might be your number one choice. Microfiber is basically polyester made from very thin strands. The strands combine to create a suede-like fabric that is very smooth and soft to the touch, not to mention staying relatively cool against the skin even in hot weather. Microfiber also has a good natural ability to shed liquids, so maintaining one isn’t that much of a disadvantage. However, because microfiber is porous and absorbent, it requires constant cleaning as it attracts dirt and debris – for the same reason it is popular as a cleaning product.
On the other hand, leather has been around for ages and has always been associated with luxury. A leather upholstered sofa will no doubt look beautiful with any decor theme in your home. Leather is also very comfortable, but there seems to be a brief factual debate here. Leather is especially comfortable in cool weather places as it takes on the temperature of the atmosphere. In tropical climates, leather can be very hot and make you sweat more – it’s non-porous and gets sticky in hot climates. As for maintenance, with normal use, leather maintenance is as simple as wiping down and using a leather conditioner occasionally.
To make choices easier, microfiber is leading the race for comfort and leather is leading the race for looks and ease of care. Of course, this is not absolute, because both also score with the strengths of the other. But the above pros and cons should easily guide you in making the final decision on what is right for your home.
