Mr. Nguyen Xuan Giang, head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Ha District, confirmed that vegetables are the main crops of the district’s winter harvest. For this year’s winter harvest, the district recommends that people grow scattered crops to avoid a rushed harvest, which is difficult to consume, even having to grow multiple crops. The harvest area is concentrated to serve the Lunar New Year.

This year’s winter harvest, the entire Bac Ha district covers an area of ​​335 ha in 19 townships and cities. The district focuses on expanding specialty vegetables, applying science and technology, and growing high-tech vegetables in Lung Phinh, Ta Chai, Na Hoi and Nam Mon townships; Concentration on products with a stable consumer market, expansion of production links and product consumption by companies and cooperatives with market favored vegetables with currently high prices such as: cabbage, kohlrabi, peas, kale, collards, collards, local cabbage, cauliflower…

Lung Phinh is a highland municipality where the Phu La and Mong ethnic minorities make up over 90% of the population. This is also the central community of the upper cluster of Bac Ha District with a typical temperate climate, cold winters, formerly deserted… In recent years, Lung Phinh has emerged as the leading community in the region growing winter crops.

In the winter-spring harvest of 2021-2022, supported by poverty alleviation funds, Lung Phinh deployed a 3-hectare kale cultivation model involving 23 households in two villages, Pa Chu Ty and Ta Chai quite high. Based on this, in the winter harvest of 2022-2023, Lung Bong Township aims to plant 35 ha of vegetables, including 3 ha of cabbage, 5 ha of special vegetables of peas, 1 ha of kohlrabi, 11 ha of beans and 4 ha of broccoli, 5.5 ha of cabbage and 3 hectares of kale.

Lung Phinh Hi-Tech Agricultural Cooperative in Ta Chai Village has now invested in building a greenhouse to grow, plant and care for off-season strawberries and vegetables and offer kale and cabbage varieties to farmers. Mr. Nguyen Duy Giang, director of the cooperative, said that the cooperative’s kale products are cultivated in the best conditions due to the favorable weather, this vegetable is available until the end of November every year.

This variety of cabbage needs to be planted only once a year, the rest of the time is spent caring for and collecting leafy products. Organic farming methods are used on the entire cabbage area and the Israeli drip irrigation system is used in cultivation. The cooperative is currently planting, incubating and supplying seed for farmers to grow and develop this specialty vegetable.

Mr. Trang Sao Long’s family from Lung Phinh Village (Lung Phinh Municipality) said that in last year’s winter-spring harvest, more than 9,000 kale plants were planted, the average selling price in the garden was 15-20,000 VND/kg. This winter harvest in 2022, the family continues to invest capital to buy seeds from the cooperative and buy fertilizer for kale cultivation.

Average income 100 million VND/ha

In Ta Chai Township, a key area for growing winter vegetables in Bac Ha District, the winter production atmosphere was quite lively. In the winter harvest of 2022 – 2023, farmers in Ta Chai commune are aiming to plant 28 hectares of legumes, mainly vegetables such as cabbage, greens, kale, kale, peas, spices and greens, onion, garlic, chilli…serving the market in the days before, during and after the Lunar New Year 2023.

Tourists to Bac Ha and out-of-province consumers love to buy kale, so now families and households in every village also grow this vegetable and diversify the vegetables to suit the market.
