Vietnam’s processed black tiger shrimp exports to Japan have surged this year thanks to strong consumer demand in that country.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Japan is the second largest single market for Vietnamese shrimp. In the first nine months of 2022, shrimp exports to Japan totaled US$515 million, up 24% from the same period last year.

In the first 9 months of this year, 118 companies exported Vietnamese shrimp to Japan, with main products such as frozen powder-coated shrimp, frozen steamed black tiger shrimp, breaded shrimp, frozen PDTO Nobashi Vannamei, frozen steamed black tiger shrimp, frozen cooked white leg shrimp, frozen steamed tailless peeled shrimp, frozen steamed white leg prawns…

It is worth noting that among the three major groups of shrimp products exported to Japan, the export value of processed black tiger shrimp grew the most, up 64%. The strong growth in processed black tiger shrimp exports to Japan is helping to drive the growth momentum of shrimp products in general to this market. Demand from the Japanese for black tiger prawns imported from Vietnam has increased over the past 1 year.

According to the World Trade Center (ITC), Japan’s shrimp imports reached nearly US$1.3 billion in the first 7 months of 2022, up 10% from the same period in 2021. The three largest suppliers to Japan are: Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.

According to VASEP, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to Japan are expected to remain stable in the final months of 2022. The freight cost to Japan is not as high as to US and EU; Inflation in Japan is also below record inflation in the US and EU. These are considered supporting factors for Vietnam’s shrimp exports to Japan.
