According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), information from Rabobank shows that the global shrimp trade will reach US$24 billion in 2021. This makes shrimp the most traded aquatic species in the world.
In 2021, the global shrimp trade will benefit from the reopening of the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic and increased consumption in the food service segment due to high retail numbers. However, after record supply and demand in 2021, the global shrimp industry is entering a tougher period.
As of 2013, the US and China are the two main drivers of shrimp consumption, with CAGRs (low annual growth rates) of 5.4% and 27%, respectively. The USA is the world’s largest shrimp importer, followed by China. These two countries import about 1 million tons of shrimp per year.
