According to the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association (VIFOREST), although there are currently no specific statistics, depending on the functional sector, about 60-70% of the domestic supply of wood raw materials is kindling, mainly wood, mainly for processing chips and pellets. Planted timber that meets export furniture processing standards accounts for only about 30-40% of the total forest volume harvested.

DEMAND FOR WOOD WITH FSC IS INCREDIBLE

Statistics from the General Department of Forestry show that the country currently has 4.4 million hectares of production forest. Of this, around 1.4 million households were allocated 3.146 million hectares of forest area.

Allocating land to households brings important economic, social and environmental benefits, as households invest in reforestation if they have land, thus helping to increase forest cover. Afforestation has helped improve the livelihoods of households, including many poor ethnic minority households, by providing a stable and long-term supply of raw materials to domestic and foreign markets…

“As of the end of March 2022, Vietnam has 53 reforestation units with 226,429 hectares of FSC-certified forests and 54,529 hectares of VFCS-certified forests.”

Forestry Directorate.

However, it is the fact that there are too many households, each household plants forests with an average planted area of only 2-10 hectares, which leads to the situation of planting early-harvested forests, harvesting young forests (acacia 4-planted forests ) 5 years old) is common. The household afforestation area is fragmented and not concentrated, so it is difficult to certify sustainable forests. In terms of cultivation techniques, forest farmers currently do not have access to a source of high-quality seeds for forest trees, although Vietnam already has a good selection of plant varieties.

Meanwhile, many export wooden furniture manufacturers said that buyers of wooden furniture in the EU and the United States currently tend to demand products made from wood with sustainable forest certification (FSC). However, the proportion of domestic forest wood with FSC certification is very small.

According to the General Department of Forestry, two international certification systems for sustainable forests are used in Vietnam, including the FSC certificate (with 10 principles and 64 criteria, applicable to wood and some non-wood products) and the National Forest Certification System (VFCS) certified by the Forest Certification Program (PEFC).
