On the first days of the New Year at Hon Ro Fishing Port, Phuoc Dong Municipality, Nha Trang City (Khanh Hoa), we witnessed the bustling atmosphere as the fishing boats one by one returned to the wharf during Tet to bring the New Year … full of fish.

These are gillnets (also known as harbor nets) specialized in hunting striped tuna, marlin, sardines, etc., and vessels specialized in sea tuna fishing are expected to return in a few days.

Fisherman Tran Quang Thai, captain of KH 90145 TS, in Hon Ro (Nha Trang city) had just finished a comfortable fishing trip full of fish and excitedly said that this trip through Tet has little wind at sea. more than a few years ago. Also, on this occasion there are fewer fishing boats than every year. As a result, the fishing vessels that returned to port to dock in port performed much better than last year’s trip through Tet.

According to fisherman Tran Quang Thai, the average catch for ships that stay at sea for 20 days or more is 12-13 tons; while the ships only sail 7 to 8 days with a power of 5-7 tons. In particular, Mr. Thai’s ship set sail from January 7th and reached the port on January 27th (ie the 6th of the lunar new year) with a production of more than 19 tons of fish of all kinds, but mainly tuna.

For grade 1 and 2 quality fish bought and sold in the market, it is higher than every year, e.g. B. Striped fish from 40,000 to 80,000 VND/kg, goby from 100,000 to 110,000 VND/kg… Striped melon is sold in buckets to customers from 20,000 to 22,000 VND/kg, shrew 19,000 VND/kg… Mr. Thai’s ship sold fish with a turnover of more than VND 500 million, minus VND 300 million in profit expenses.

After eating according to the ratio, the shipowner pocketed 150 million, and the 12 shipmates each earned more than 12 million dong, along with a bonus of 3 million dong each before Tet. So on this voyage, the shipmates pocketed more than 15 million dong, had the sea fortune at the beginning of the year, so were very excited.

Similarly, the ship KH 93979, led by fisherman Tran Thanh Long, also docked in Hon Ro (Nha Trang City) port on January 28 (the 7th day of the Lunar New Year), after more than 20 days of sailing sea followed was a catch of 15 tons of fish of all kinds.

Fisherman Tran Thanh Long said his vessel with the above performance sold fish for a profit of more than 200 million dong. Thanks to the happiness of the sea at the beginning of the year, fishermen are all excited because, according to them, the first trip of the new year is always the most important and determines the happiness of fishing for the whole year.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu, head of the Hon Ro Fishing Port Board of Directors, said the first fishing boats returned to the port from Jan. 23, the 2nd day of Tet. So far nearly 20 vessels have fished through Tet returning to port. Thanks to the stable mackerel price from the barns and the high market value of the mackerel, most boats have sea buds at the beginning of the year.

IUU Compliant Vessels

Mr. Vo Khac En, deputy director of Khanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-department, said that during the Tet holiday across the province, about 100 tuna fishing boats, long-distance fishing boats, were stuck at sea. Up to this point the ships follow the sea easily and safely.

Meanwhile, Hon Ro Port Fisheries Inspection and Control Representative Office, all vessels that have just docked in the port have been fishing in Vietnamese waters at Truong Sa fishing grounds, DK1 station houses, etc., according to the fishing log. Prior to docking, all vessels comply with regulations to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Accordingly, all ships will be informed 1 hour in advance and informed through communication channels to the fishing vessel control team to arrange inspection personnel. Along with the arrangement of a 24-hour task force to closely monitor fishing vessels operating at sea through tracking devices linked to the shore station, this demonstrates that all fishing vessels are operating within Vietnam’s territorial waters without breaching foreign waters.

Earlier, on October 18-25, 2022, the European Commission (EC) Inspection Delegation worked with Khanh Hoa Province to inspect the implementation of the local anti-IUU fishing task.

According to Khanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-Department, the EC inspection team found through inspection that Khanh Hoa Province has basically performed well in the task of combating IUU fishing and has fully met the requirements for inspection work. records, books for recording, storing and applying information technology for timely monitoring, summarizing and retrieving data.

It is known that fisheries production in Khanh Hoa Province will reach 95,000 tons in 2022, accounting for 87% of the total production; with an export turnover of USD 760 million.

According to our records of these days, while fishing boats return to port during Tet, the ships that have not followed the sea are currently busy preparing fishing gear, fuel and necessities to open the sea. According to the fishermen, the fishing boats coming back from the Tet holiday have a good yield at present, so the fishermen expect a full fishing season to generate income and stabilize their lives. It is known that on January 30 these ships will open the sea at the same time.
