The highest price for durian is almost 1 million VND/fruit
On the occasion of the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit, the price of many fruits has increased, so farmers are very excited. The price of durian in particular is a hot topic that worries farmers in the Mekong Delta the most. Because before Tet, the price of this fruit remained at a record high.
According to traders, the price for a bucket in the garden for Dona Durian (Monthong) ranges from 130,000 to 140,000 VND/kg. As for Ri6 Durian, the price in the garden is also around VND120,000/kg. The price in Dona Durian’s barn peaked at 190,000 VND/kg. Each durian fruit (about 5 kg) is worth nearly 1 million VND.

According to Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh, Durian Purchasing Agent of Van Hoa Investment Co., Ltd – Long Khanh Municipality Branch, Cai Lay City, Tien Giang Province, said: Vietnamese durian is very popular in the Chinese market. Especially in the Mekong Delta, especially in Tien Giang, durian has a very special taste. At this point it was just the start of the off-season, so performance was still poor.
In order to be able to buy enough goods, traders are currently required to make a deposit of 50% of the value of the expected crop to the gardeners. “For gardens harvested from now through the 20th lunar month, traders deposit VND160,000/kg for Dona durian, VND120,000/kg for Ri6 durian,” said a gardener in Ngu Hiep township.
Tien Giang Province has an area of over 82,000ha of fruit trees, which is concentrated in districts including: Cai Be, Tan Phuoc, Cho Gao, Cai Lay and Cai Lay City with key crops such as durian, pineapple (pineapple), dragon fruit , jackfruit. In particular, durian trees have an area of around 17,600 hectares, the tree is almost 12,000 hectares in the business period. In recent years, the rate of dealing with the off-season and setting crops on Tien Giang durian trees accounted for about 70%.
Cai Be District has an area of about 23,000 hectares of fruit trees. Key fruits like durian, jackfruit, mango, hoa loc sand. Mr. Phan Van Thanh, deputy chief of the district’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said, The district has about 7,000 hectares of durian fruit in particular, of which about 3,000 hectares are in the fruiting season. Farmers process early fruit in the off-season at about 20-30% and sell it at a very good price.

The main fruits are all good prizes
Not only durian has a high price, jackfruit, dragon fruit and pineapple are also expensive. In Tong Chanh Jackfruit Barn (Hiep Duc Municipality, Cai Lay District), on January 30, 2023, the price of Thai jackfruit is Type 1 VND 35,000/kg, Type 2 VND 29,000/kg, Class 3 VND 25,000/kg. According to the owner of this barn, the production of jackfruit in the garden is still very low, so the price will increase by about 10,000 VND/kg compared to before the Lunar New Year and will tend to increase further in the coming days.
For dragon fruit, the price of red flesh dragon fruit before Tet has the highest price of up to VND 42,000/kg. After Tet, raw material prices remain at 35,000 VND/kg. The reason is that traders make deposits to gardeners before Tet.
Pineapple (pineapple) currently has a quite good price of 7,000 VND/kg. Mr. Bui Huu Thien, a pineapple farmer in Tan Hoa Dong Township, Tan Phuoc District, said the pineapple price is better this year than in previous years. Before Tet, he sold a few tens of tons of pineapples at the price of 8,500 VND/kg, an increase of more than 1,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Vo Van Men, director of the Tien Giang Province Cultivation and Plant Protection Subdivision, most people who grow fruit trees are very excited this year. Especially on this Tet holiday, the main fruits have good prices. The reason is in particular that the consumption situation on the Chinese market has improved after the Covid 19 pandemic.
In addition, people plant scattered plants, the exit is less congested. Therefore, Mr. Men added: Things must go well in the coming period, especially during the cold season in China, from around October to the Lunar New Year.
As for the durian fruit, in order to make it more convenient to export to the Chinese market, the Tien Giang Provincial Cultivation and Plant Protection Subdivision has so far assisted municipalities to develop a cultivation area code with an area of about 6,000 ha more than 50% of the fruit tree area.
Mr. Vo Van Men added: About a month before Tet, the Chinese customs side checked more than 70 records of growing area codes and 30 provincial packhouse codes. “Since the situation is also very positive, we are also awaiting the results to notify people and businesses,” said Mr. Men.
