Everywhere in the onion and garlic fields in Kinh Mon Town (Hai Duong) – which is considered the largest “capital” for onion and garlic in the north – there is a rushing working atmosphere everywhere these days, the hustle and bustle of the harvest season. This year, onion growers are harvesting with excitement because onions are relatively well flavored and sold at good prices.
In the winter-spring harvest of 2022 – 2023, Mr. Nguyen Van Chien’s family (Lac Long Municipality) planted almost 2 hectares of onions. Due to the unfavorable weather at the beginning of the harvest and heavy rain, the yield was 7-10% less than the previous harvest. . At present, the onion yield is slightly lower after 4 months of planting, but the onion price is three times higher than at the beginning of the previous year’s harvest. Mr. Chien shared, “My family is growing a lot, so I sold almost 1 acre to traders by ‘selling’ the entire field for VND 10 million/sao. The sale of fresh onions is about VND 25,000 to 27,000/kg, three times as much as last year. Onions come at a price, so we’re very excited.”
This is also the time when the onion and garlic shopping establishments in Kinh Mon city are busy in season. Hung Manh Onion and Garlic Purchasing Plant (Hiep Hoa Municipality) sells more than 10 tons of onions and garlic daily, creating jobs and regular income for 10 local workers with salary of 5-7 million VND/month. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan, the owner of the shop, said, “We buy fresh onions and garlic from people. Then hire workers to do preliminary processing, remove unqualified tubers, and then pack them up, put them in the oven to dry them, and sell them to other provinces and cities across the country. Many orders cannot be delivered to customers on time due to lack of time. point is not enough workers to do”.
Onions and garlic have long been rich crops of the people of Kinh Mon city. Every year, the city cultivates about 3,800 ha of onions and garlic in the winter crop; The average production is over 60,000 tons, the economic value is over 1,000 billion VND. This year, although the weather is not favorable at the beginning of the harvest due to the influence of rain, but with the advantage of land, production experience, and especially the high and stable onion price right at the beginning of the season, people have a successful onion harvest big.
After harvesting, most people transport them home to dry, pre-process, and store for sale year-round. The rest is sold to onion purchasing companies. The price of dried onions once ranges from 50,000 VND to 60,000 VND/kg, apart from the investment cost, people earn a profit of 20 to 22 million VND/stick.
Many people in Kinh Mon Town not only export and sell raw products, but also invest in equipment and gain experience in processing non-onion products to meet the needs of domestic and export markets.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, owner of a non-municipal onion factory in Lac Long, shared, “Thanks to its unique flavor, deliciousness and sweetness, Kinh Mon onion has gradually attracted consumers’ attention in recent years Onion manufactures are always available, allowing us to supply them at any time to customers who require large quantities, thereby helping to improve the economics of onion and garlic products for farmers like us.”
With the characteristics of the climate, soil and experience of cultivating many generations of people, the quality of onion and garlic in Kinh Mon city always has many outstanding advantages in terms of aroma and moderately spicy taste, making the dish more delicious; preferred by consumers.
