It is vital that everyone participates in doing their bit for the environment if impacts are to be made on a global scale. As one of the top 50 countries with greenhouse gas emissions, the UK needs to ensure it is doing its best elsewhere to ensure it is no longer contributing to the global deterioration of the world.
Fortunately, the current government has plans to try to combat the ignorance of the last few decades, including more recycling programs being offered and plans to reduce both household and commercial waste and landfill use. It is also now necessary that stores only sell energy saving light bulbs and that many other methods are in place to help us help the planet.
Environmental awareness can have many faces. You buy locally produced fresh produce that has a lower carbon footprint and your local businesses enable you to do so. They are the ones who use public transport whenever possible and pay as much attention to energy saving and recycling at work as they do at home.
It’s easy these days to make sure the products we use are as eco-friendly as possible. The new recycling schemes mean plastics can now be reused and some UK and global companies can now use this to package their products or make their shopping bags. IKEA, for example, uses recycled plastic bags, as do many other companies. You can generally tell by their thicker quality. Household garbage bags are now also often made from recycled plastic. Just make sure you’re on the lookout for products that you know use this technology to help.
Everyone these days knows how to use a cloth bag to get their groceries to and from the shops (perfect to fold up and put in a purse or pocket too) and to make sure they turn devices off the mains instead of on to go on standby. However, make sure you demand the same from the manufacturers and companies you trust to supply you with goods. Ask about their carbon footprint or green programs and make sure you check how they rank on the Times Green List and other eco-friendliness rankings.
Above all, remember that every little effort you can make will make a difference. The UK is now making a conscious effort to be greener, so make sure you show your patriotism and prove our country can make a difference.
