Tam Duong is one of the major tea-growing districts of Lai Chau Province. Tea is currently a key crop that helps people develop their family economy and reduce the rate of household poor…
In the Ban Giang community alone, this district has a tea area of up to 300 hectares. With the local support policy of developing tea trees for economic purposes related to rural new construction, farmers in the area have voluntarily donated land to build roads in the fields. Thanks to this, people are more convenient in the care, transportation of fertilizers, seedlings, collection of products …
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Xuyen from Doan Ket Village, Ban Giang Township, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province, said the family has been cultivating tea since 1993 and currently farms about 1.5 hectares. The price of fresh bud tea is currently around 5,000 VND/kg delivered to the factory. Although the price of tea is not high, the yield is stable and helps his family earn about 170-180 million VND per year (excluding expenses).
According to Mr. Xuyen, the whole tea area is taken care of by his wife and husband, so they can do it and have a relatively stable income.
Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh from Doan Ket Hamlet, Ban Giang Township (Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province) said the purchase price was higher than before since the tea factory started operating.
“The more factories, the more excited people are, as if my house will be sold to this factory for 5,000 VND/kg, up from last year. With each litter, my family collects about 3 tons of tea, in general the income is good. Here people live off tea, but grow little corn just to raise pigs and chickens. Minus the ashes and eat safely, about 50 million VND per year. Since there is a tea factory, people’s life here is much better, tea consumption is relatively convenient,” Ms. Anh said.
Currently, a production coupling model has also formed between farmers and companies. The farmers’ tea has stable production and income, while the tea processing factory can improve production efficiency, because there is a sustainable raw material area, mutually beneficial.
Mr. Do Viet Trung, director of Tay Bac Agricultural Seeds One Member Limited Company, said that the company has been successful by conquering the market, as well as the investment promotion program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Lai Chau Provincial People’s Committee was bold and invested with tea products in the agricultural sector.
Every year, the company’s capital investment for tea farmers is about VND 20 billion in fertilizer, on average, each tea-growing household is allowed to borrow at least 1 ton of fertilizer with deferred payment, and then buy products Covid-19, the farmers faced difficulties, the company still bought tea, to to retaliate and create conditions for farmers to develop production.
“In 2022, the company has boldly invested and developed a tea processing factory to stabilize the local people’s tea purchases. Since January 2023, many households have joined the association and expanded the area, so we continue to invest up to 2 tons/household in fertilizers for some communities like Ban Bo, Ban Giang, Binh Lu…,” Mr. Do Viet told Trung.
Tea trees in Ban Giang Township have been planted for a long time, with many 10-20 year old trees. With the existing area of intensive tea cultivation, it opens up opportunities for people to escape poverty and have a stable income.
“Tea trees have provided farmers with a stable life for many years and are their main source of income. The placement of a number of tea factories in the area is a signal confirming the stability of the tea plants in the area.
These factories make it easier for farmers to consume tea directly in the community, reducing transportation costs and increasing income. We expect that tea will develop sustainably in the coming period and continue to be a key crop to stabilize people’s lives,” said Doan Van Pyongyang, chairman of the People’s Committee of Ban Giang Township (Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province ). .
