At the meeting, both sides reviewed the positive developments of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership over the past period. Two-way trade turnover has grown impressively, reaching $123 billion in 2022. The active cooperation between the two countries in preventing the COVID-19 pandemic, the effectiveness of cooperation projects to overcome the consequences of war, typically the decontamination project at Bien Hoa Airport, the number of Vietnam international students in the USA is increasing.

Minister Bui Thanh Son reiterated that Vietnam regards the United States as one of its key partners and aims to further develop the comprehensive partnership based on mutual benefit while respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and political institutions of both sides and others.

Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the coordination between the two foreign ministries in the past period, particularly Foreign Minister Blinken’s role in promoting Vietnam-US relations, including a high-level phone call between the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the US letters by Nguyen Phu Trong and US President Joe Biden, which will help build confidence, create more motivation and open a new phase for cooperation between the two countries in the coming period.

Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested the two sides to increase delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at high levels in 2023 on the occasion of the 10th for the benefit of the two countries as a contribution to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and in the world.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated that the US attaches great importance to friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. He agreed with Minister Bui Thanh Son that the two sides must continue cooperation and promote bilateral ties based on the principles agreed by the senior leaders of both sides.

Secretary of State Blinken recognized Vietnam’s dynamic development, role and position in the region and reaffirmed the US commitment to respecting Vietnam’s political institutions, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and to supporting a “strong, independent, self-sufficient, prosperous” Vietnam.

Regarding the content of the cooperation, Secretary of State Blinken reiterated that the US government will continue to allocate resources and budgets to help Vietnam overcome the aftermath of the war and promote cooperation between the two countries in important areas such as trade, investment and science continue to support – technology, digital transformation, green transformation, high-quality human resource training to serve Vietnam’s development goals.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern. Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that the US continue to play an active role and contribute to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region and the world.

Secretary of State Blinken reiterated that the US supports ASEAN’s pivotal role in the region and will further promote cooperation within the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership – US, Climate Change Response and UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO).

The two sides also exchanged views on the Baltic Sea issue and agreed on the importance of peace, security, stability and freedom of navigation and overflight in the Baltic Sea and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to fully implement the DOC and work towards an effective and substantive COC.
