If you have kids and no family around but want to go out for a quiet adults only dinner, what do you do? In most cases you would hire a babysitter. This is usually a teenager off the street or someone a trusted friend knows who will come to your house and babysit your kids for a few hours while you go out. This babysitter would look after the children, make sure they have dinner, possibly clear the dishes and perhaps put the children to bed at the agreed time after some stories or games have been played.
If you have kids and you go to work every day but don’t want to put them in daycare, what do you do? Normally you would hire a nanny at this point. Yes, their job is to look after children like a babysitter, but a nanny will do much, much more for you and your family.
A babysitter is paid either by the hour or a flat rate for the evening and is paid on your return to the house. A nanny is paid a salary either weekly or bi-weekly for the work she does with your children and as it is actual work and not just a way to make some money on a Saturday night.
A nanny’s job is to look after the children, prepare and clean up their meals, bathe them, play games, help with their homework, take them to classes or sports, and be there for them during their shifts . A nanny can either live in her own apartment or with the family, but as with any other job, she always has the weekdays off.
You might think that a nanny is reserved for celebrities or royalty, but in fact many families employ one to make their lives easier. It makes parents happy knowing that their children are well cared for and all their needs met, and it gives employment to someone trained in early childhood development who enjoys working with children.
Finding a babysitter for your children every once in a while is a great idea but should not be confused with a nanny who does a professional job and works hard to take care of your children.
