First training program

In recent years, the pet market (mainly dogs, cats and ornamental birds) in Vietnam has tended to grow, especially in developed provinces and cities.

According to statistics from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, the country will have 8 million domestic dogs and 2 million domestic cats by 2022. Vietnam’s pet care industry revenue accounts for 13% (equivalent to $500 million) in Southeast Asia.

As the pet industry grows, the demand for human resources from pet veterinarians who are highly skilled in this field is becoming scarce.

According to the 2022 survey data, the demand for specialist veterinarians for pets in the period 2022 – 2027 mainly relates to 2 subject groups. Of these, veterinary clinics and hospitals (54%), animal husbandry and veterinary medicine companies (44%), the rest (7%) are government agencies.

Since then, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry – Veterinary Medicine of Thailand’s Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry has developed a training program aimed at enabling learners to practice skills in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of animal diseases upon graduation, or to implement self-intensive business models .

By 2023, Thailand’s Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry will pioneer pet-specialized veterinary training program (official system). This is a discipline that first appeared in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine educational institutions in Vietnam.

Accordingly, the training duration of the program is more than 4 years in the form of learning credits. The scope of enrollment is nationwide, the subjects are high school graduates, based on the grades in the Abitur 2023, achieving the entrance quality grade determined and announced by the university in accordance with the regulations.

Talking to reporters newspapers Vietnamese cultureMs. Phan Thi Hong Phuc, Dean of Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, said that the opening of a pet major comes from education capacity, social needs, and mission and goals and development orientation from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry.

The pet training program will help drive the university’s development strategy in the future and make Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry one of the leading universities in Vietnam by 2030.

“With training capacity, we have a team of experienced faculty with over 60% Ph.D. The courses are taught by the university’s faculty and some leading experts in Vietnam and internationally. From there, it helps the students gain basic knowledge, practical skills and the ability to work independently in the field,” Ms. Phuc shared.

According to Ms. Phuc, graduates have many job opportunities after graduation in veterinary clinics, hospitals, companies involved in veterinary medicine, pets, administrative and career agencies, municipalities, stations or higher, and educational and training institutions such as colleges and universities related to theirs majors.

The opening of a Pet Major is in line with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry’s development strategy when it comes to multidisciplinary education. This is also a highly practical discipline that creates human resources and jobs for employees and meets the needs of society and the market in the future.
