can tho Using rice straw organic fertilizer to fertilize rice has helped reduce fertilizer and chemical drug costs by 35-40%. Profit increased by 10%.

On May 18, Can Tho’s Plantation and Crop Protection Sub-department held a field workshop on “Rice Cultivation Model Using Straw Organic Fertilizer” in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

The model was used in the summer-autumn rice harvest of 2023 in the household of Mr. Tran Van Dao in Tan Hung District, Thot Not District (Can Tho City) with an area of 1.7 ha, of which 1 ha was model cultivated Fertilizer: organic Rice straw fertilizer and the remaining area (7 workers) as a control were farmed according to traditional methods using 100% chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Mr. Tran Van Dao said that in this year’s summer-autumn rice harvest, the model field of organic rice cultivation, 1 ton of straw manure is used to fertilize 1 hectare of rice, divided into multiple batches during harvest. Also, there is a small amount of NPK fertilizer sponsored by Phu My Fertilizer Company to ensure there are enough nutrients for the green rice.

In this rice crop, Mr. Dao grows variety OM5451 and sows seeds at a rate of 80 kg/ha. His family’s rice harvest is now pending. According to the preliminary evaluation results of the professional industry, the yield of fresh rice on the model field is estimated at 6.4 tons/ha, 0.3 more than on the control field. tons/ha.

According to Mr. Dao, the family currently has about 1 ha of organic rice left for harvest in about a week. Traders have come to the house to pay a deposit in advance and buy the rice at the price of VND 6,300/kg after everything is deducted. Besides the cost, he also made a profit of more than 3 million dong/work.

Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, head of Can Tho City’s Plantation and Crop Protection Subdepartment, said that the model field using organic fertilizer composted from straw (1 ton/ha) helps the roots of the rice plant grow larger and grow longer than that of rice straw. with the unfertilized fields of the farmers. The roots are spread far and deep to help the rice plant be strong and limit post-harvest falls and losses…

Rice production is based on the model of using certified seed or higher, the sowing density is low (80 kg/ha) and the priming with organic fertilizer at the beginning of the harvest helps to reduce nitrogenous fertilizers and the possibility of the formation and generation of Limiting pests and diseases thereby reducing the amount of pesticides, which helps reduce production costs, increase productivity, increase profits and improve rice grain quality.

According to the director of Can Tho’s Plantations and Crop Protection Subdepartment, the city’s agricultural sector is currently implementing pilot rice cultivation schemes using rice straw organic fertilizers in combination with technical advances. “1 must decrease 5” in districts such as Thoi Lai, Co Do and Thot Not districts… each model has been demonstrated on 1ha and has 2 rice crops with 6 models deployed (Winter-Spring Harvest and Summer-Autumn Harvest ) carried out in 2023.

Through the evaluation results, the model helps farmers reduce the cost of using fertilizers and chemical drugs by 35-40% and increase profit by 10% on the same area compared to traditional production.

“The solution of organic rice cultivation using organic fertilizers from rice straw has helped farmers significantly reduce production costs. In the coming period, Can Tho’s agricultural sector recommends reproducing this model so that more farmers know and use it,” Ms. said.

The straw organic fertilizer use model yielded a fresh rice yield of 6.4 t/ha, 0.3 t/ha more than the control field; The profit brings more than 30 million VND/ha. Photo: Le Hoang Vu.

International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Office Manager Ms. Dinh Thi Kim Dung in Vietnam said that from 2022, IRRI will support farmers’ education in cooperation with Can Tho City’s Crop Production and Crop Protection Sub-department. People in Thot Not district about the technique of using rice straw and converting it into organic fertilizer for rice.

“This time we came back here and saw that farmers are using organic fertilizer made from rice straw to fertilize rice to make the rice greener, reduce pests and increase productivity. It can be said that it is a circular farming model that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. , is environmentally friendly and adapts to climate change to minimize production costs and produce safe and high quality products.
