Improve success rate for shrimp farmers

On May 24th, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) held a seminar on “For a Sustainable Shrimp Industry” and discussed open issues in the shrimp value chain. Shrimp.

Opening the discussion, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, chairman of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Seed Association and chairman of the South Central Group, said that the current foundation of the shrimp industry is based on many shortcomings, many hidden things and many reasons. Not yet, we haven’t succeeded in farming shrimp.

Therefore, the discussion should be open, frank, transparent and clear. “Try to play through all the facts to find solutions to improve the success rate of shrimp farmers and develop the shrimp industry in the future,” said Mr. Hoang Anh.

According to Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe, Secretary-General of VASEP, the shrimp industry in particular and seafood in general will face many difficulties and challenges in 2023. The goal of reaching $10 billion by 2023 is elusive. Due to the fact that many farmers are tired of farming their shrimp and stocking up, many shrimp farmers are forced to sell live shrimp to Cambodia instead of exporting shrimp. This is a fact that the shrimp industry needs to recognize.

According to Hoe, in order to maintain the world’s leading position in shrimp exports, in addition to food and materials, good and standardized shrimp seeds are also an input factor for the success of farmers.

Statistics, on the other hand, show that there are more than 2,000 breeding and breeding farms, but only more than 1,200 farms have received certificates of suitability. This shows that still a very large percentage of circulated shrimp seeds can affect the production of shrimp farmers.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Chairman of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Seed Association, the shrimp industry is currently facing three problems: How to improve the success rate in shrimp farming given the current situation? well control the quality and cost of products in shrimp farming; Manage and control the standards, quality and value of Vietnamese shrimp.

“Following the guidance of VASEP, the pioneer should consider breeding as the first target to be corrected,” said Mr. Hoang Anh.

Regarding shrimp seed, Mr. Hoang Anh said that the Vietnam shrimp seed report is currently incorrect, the statistics are incorrect, causing everyone to look up at the clouds. We are too abstract when it comes to profitable seed shrimp. In fact, the value portion of shrimp seed accounts for only 5-7% of the cost of a successful crop, but it determines the success of a crop in tens of percentage ranges.

Complete Shrimp Industry Database

“Everyone says that proactive seed production is good, but why isn’t the shrimp industry good? That is the question, we are wrong, from the number of shrimp seeds to the evaluation of shrimp seed production. From there you convey the message.” “The planning is not correct, the planning is widespread,” said the chairman of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Seed Association.

Mr Truong Dinh Hoe shared the same opinion and also acknowledged that the current issue with data and statistics on the shrimp industry is still lame. Many large shrimp farms are doing very well, but good facilities are not yet in place, without a detailed and transparent database they are equated with ‘both good and not good’.

“If the database is done well, shrimp farmers will have access to good seed information and success will be better. It’s time to think about a “sustainable shrimp alliance”… From there, provide reliable sources of information based on interconnected data sources.

The association will work with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to discuss more specific regulations. We need to get closer to global standards. Therefore, VASEP would like to cooperate with shrimp farms in order to provide VASEP with transparent information. Since then, a complete and transparent database has been built to provide farm households with more timely information and complete recommendations and decisions on production, processing and export issues in a more reasonable manner, thus helping the shrimp industry to stabilize and develop in the coming period,” said VASEP Secretary General.

India and Ecuador need to cut shrimp costs

According to Mr. Le Van Quang, director of Minh Phu Seafood Joint Stock Company, how India and Ecuador can lower the shrimp price allows the shrimp farming chain to develop and be sustainable.

“There is no other way but to find a cost-cutting solution,” Quang said, adding that to bring down the cost of farming, there must be an agricultural process and a concentrated agricultural area (the national one), according to Quang Average only 1-3 ha/household, small-scale agriculture) does not have its own water supply and drainage canals but works in the same canal, leading to the spread of diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to establish large, concentrated shrimp production zones and breeding technologies suitable for each breeding model and breeding area…

Mr Quang also said that Minh Phu negotiated and decided to carry out a project to improve the competitiveness of Vietnam’s shrimp industry.

“We hired someone to write the project and we want to work with all companies to complete this project. This project includes: We want to cost-effectively produce shrimp seed and broodstock and domesticate shrimp to make this project possible. for better resilience to disease and the environment; to produce high quality seeds and have a standard brood area; and having clean brood feed,” said Mr. Quang.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, chairman of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Seed Association and chairman of the South Central Group, said the meeting achieved many common solutions and coordination between the parties. In the near future, there will be specific solutions aimed at all parties in the value chain, and will create many breakthroughs, bringing mutual benefits to all components, and will also promote the development of shrimp industry in the near future. Next time.
