Causes of dermatomyositis

Dermatitis nodules are an infectious disease that only affects buffalo and cows, but not humans and other animals. The disease entered our country in early October 2020, and then spread to many provinces and cities across the country.

The first outbreak of skin diseases in buffalo and cows occurred in Khanh Hoa in July 2021 in Khanh Binh township, Khanh Vinh district, according to the provincial sub-department of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. After that, the disease spread to 8 counties and cities and affected nearly 1,200 cows.

In November 2021, My Loc Village, Binh Loc Township, Dien Khanh District saw the latest outbreak of dermatomyositis in the province.

Mr Le Thang, director of Khanh Hoa’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, said by monitoring the causes of cattle diseases in the region, it was determined that they were caused by contact with infected buffalo and cows. Convenient transportation of buffalo and cows from other places. In addition, extreme weather has reduced the resistance of livestock, which creates favorable conditions for the development and spread of pathogens.

In addition, dermatomyositis is very contagious as it is spread through a wide range of transmission through insect bites such as flies, mosquitoes, ticks and blood-sucking seagulls. Meanwhile, people’s buffalo and cow grazing in the fields and common pastures is widespread.

In particular, conditions on livestock farms, especially in the region’s mountainous areas, are still limited, making it difficult to implement disease prevention measures.

In order to prevent skin infections in buffalo and cows, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Veterinary Bureau has instructed and recommended farmers to actively apply strict disease-proof breeding measures in the past. Only buy healthy buffalo and cows from reputable farms.

At the same time, fully vaccinated against dangerous diseases in buffalo and cows such as foot-and-mouth disease, dermatitis, pasteurellosis, cleaning and disinfection with specific chemicals to kill intermediate hosts such as ticks, seagulls, flies, mosquitoes, etc.

Spray once every 7-10 days according to manufacturer’s instructions e.g. B.: Deltox, Hantox, Vime-Frondog, Fip-Tox, Mebi-tactics in the breeding area; Supplementation of nutrients and minerals to improve the resistance of livestock.

Actively prevent diseases

Mr. Le Ngoc Tu, head of Cam Lam District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station, said there are about 4,400 buffalo and cows in the district. Since the beginning of the year, there have been no outbreaks of dermatophytosis in cattle and buffalo in the region as farmers are actively preventing diseases, particularly through vaccinations from October to November 2022. Therefore, buffalo and cows in the area are immune to the protection (12 months).

Our records with the family of Mr. Nguyen Bao An, a breeding cow breeder, in Van Tu Dong Village, Cam Hoa Township (Cam Lam), show that he is very conscious of disease prevention and control.

Mr. An said that his herd of cows is always close to 20 cows and sells 5-7 calves per year, valued at VND15-16 million/capita. Raising cows is the family’s main source of income, so he attaches great importance to cow health.

Therefore, he said that in addition to vaccination and environmental hygiene in the breeding area, regular spraying of insecticides will also have positive effects as the disease vectors will be destroyed.

Mr Le Thang said there has been only one outbreak of skin disease in the province since the beginning of the year so far in Xuan Tay village, Van Hung (Van Ninh), causing a four-month-old calf to die. . There have been no new outbreaks in the province since February 20.

According to Mr. Le Thang, the sub-department has advised the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Epidemic Prevention and Control, including inflammatory skin diseases in buffalo and cows to issue the February 15, 2023 No. 502 plan for epidemic prevention and control. Livestock diseases in 2023.

Accordingly, the Khanh Hoa provincial veterinary bureau is expected to organize a round of vaccination against rash for cattle and buffalo from herds with fewer than 10 animals in October and November before the protective immunity period expires. The total number of vaccinated cattle is about 42,000, representing about 80% of the total herd.

In addition, the subdivision has directed the county veterinary system to coordinate with local authorities to strengthen disease surveillance. If it is found that buffalo and cows are infected, suspected of having nodular dermatitis, die for unknown reasons, or buffalo, cows and products of buffalo and cows are smuggled, suspected of smuggling, or whose origin is unknown, the following must be present carried out. Collect a sample to test for dermatomyositis. From there, take timely action to prevent the spread of the disease…

According to Khanh Hoa Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine Sub-department, Livestock and Poultry Disease Prevention Sub-department has provided more than 20,000 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine for buffalo and cows and more than 400,000 doses in the first six months of 2023 flu vaccine. Poultry for municipalities to introduce vaccination. As a result, vaccination rates against these diseases are over 80-96% of the total population.
