There may still be a few attics that have remained untouched for decades, housing treasures from the past. One of the most useful items from past centuries is the tea trolley. Once used for formal teas, these carts contained delicious sandwiches and pretty desserts, as well as the afternoon pick-me-up teapot served in delicate china cups.
You see, wheeled carts are not new; We’ve just found many more uses for this useful throwback piece of furniture. Young married couples from the forties, fifties and sixties found the enamel kitchen trolley particularly useful in kitchens with little storage space. Finally banished to the garage and then to the landfill, oh my god they just screamed, “Save me!” A fresh coat of paint for the outdoors and this once discarded utility trolley makes a great garden trolley or display trolley for colorful herb pots near the kitchen door or just pretty potted flowers.
Check out IKEA for mobile islands and carts on wheels. Many have locking casters to keep them where you need them and wheels to move them to where you need them most. Simple carts can be painted and outfitted with accessories to suit your personal needs. For example, a plain bathroom can be brightened up with a pop of color on a newly painted trolley of bath accessories and towels.
Grandma’s old tea trolley can be given new life as a bedside table and not only contains the necessary bedside lamp, but also plenty of books, reading glasses, tissues for sad stories and a clock to wake you up for a new morning. If the old tea trolley is in good condition and suits you in its original form, great; but if not, paint it to your liking. If it’s not a museum-quality piece, have some fun with color; even the most conservative piece is fun in apple green or poppy red in front of a wall in subtle colors.
Tea trolleys can find a home in any room with space. Dining rooms are the expected place for a piece like this, but I like to shake it up a bit. An entryway is another good spot for a tea trolley to store mail, your keys and an inviting vase of fresh garden flowers.
A wheeled cart is a great home office for the computer printer and paper and even files kept in colorful boxes.
Of course, having the cart on wheels outside by the pool makes perfect sense for keeping towels on the bottom shelf and a pitcher of ice-cold lemonade, tea or whatever to go with your palette on the top shelf. To be on the safe side, use a sturdy plastic pitcher and glasses for the pool area.
