When I was a little younger, I didn’t bother with home furniture. Plastic minimalist chairs and tables from a place like IKEA were fine. They were functional and cheap, which was all I was really looking for. But now that I’m older and much more established, I’m absolutely keen on implementing a more stylish interior concept. I’ve recently opened my eyes to the wonderful world of French antique furniture, so I need to start acquiring a few pieces for my living room and bedroom.

I am by no means an expert on French antique furniture. I’m not sure what is most sought after by professional dealers and collectors and I can’t even identify the period some of these pieces are from. You’ll probably find some snobs who think that my lack of knowledge should automatically put me off buying French antique furniture, but I don’t really care. I’m not out to impress anyone; I just want to invest in some nice armchairs, dressers, wardrobes and decorative accessories for the house.

From what I’ve seen in catalogs and online, I like antique French furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries the best. You will find some amazingly stunning pieces available including a Louis XV desk that I have had my eye on for quite some time. Of course these are reproductions as I could never afford such an original piece. But that’s ok, I don’t mind starting small!

There are a few different methods I can use to purchase the merchandise I want. Initially, I can purchase reproductions of French antique furniture from well-known domestic dealers. That would mean either scouring the countryside and stopping by every antique shop I happen to come across, or spending some time using an internet search engine to find a dealer who can ship at a reasonable cost. I don’t feel like wasting my weekends on this, so search the internet for it.

Another alternative will be purchasing from international dealers. This can be important if I am pursuing a particularly rare reproduction or particular oddity or painting that is not readily available here in America. Again, I would use the internet to find someone who has the item I want and can import it directly for me. Positive, this will be a lot more expensive than buying from a store in the United States, but I would be willing to sacrifice the extra money to get this closet, which I personally am dying to have!

I look forward to starting building my personal collection of antique French furniture in the near future. They may not be originals, but they will still look great in my house. As long as I can find a few trustworthy places to buy my furniture from and as long as the pieces arrive intact, I’ll be happy!
