The Vietnam Shipbuilding and Marine Machinery Equipment Exhibition (Vietnam International Marine, Shipbuilding & Offshore Expo 2023 – VIMOX 2023) will be held on July 5-7, 2023 at the Exhibition Palace of Construction, Architecture Planning National, Hanoi.

dr Hoang Hung – Vice President and Secretary General of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Science and Technology Association (VISIA) said that VISIA is a professional social organization that includes academies, schools that train human resources, manufacturers, quality inspectors and a large number of scientists specialized in the shipbuilding industry.

VISIA, in cooperation with Fireworks Trade Media and FIREWOKS SINGAPORE Co.,Ltd. VIMOX-2023 co-organized to connect the two sides of Vietnam and Singapore in shipbuilding and repair industry. The event was attended by many companies that supply materials, equipment, design software, and science and technology for international ships.

According to Mr. Hoang Hung, the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry was slowing down and faced many difficulties in the early 2000s due to the impact of the global economic recession and the particular difficulties of the Vietnamese economy. This led to a sharp drop in orders for the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry, even when there were none, leading to many shipyards having to reorganize their production and business or going bankrupt.

dr Hoang Hung said that the recession in our country’s shipbuilding industry is gradually over. At present, the shipbuilding industry is recovering, shipbuilding plants have developed in all regions from north to south.

There are currently about 120 large and small shipbuilding factories in the country, and annual output has increased tenfold over the past decade, instead of being previously concentrated in economically developed areas such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City .

The number of institutions that develop and supply materials and equipment for the industry has also grown, and are responsible for the development of products with special features and high scientific and technological content. Providing equipment and materials of different kinds to fully meet the shipbuilding and repair facilities.

At the seminar “Prospects and Development of Shipbuilding Industry in Vietnam”, Mr. Pham Binh Minh – General Director of Vietnam Shipbuilding Engineering Joint Stock Company (VISEC) gave the lecture: “A Generation of New Cargo Ships Designed and Built in Vietnam”.

According to Mr. Minh, Vietnam’s total shipping fleet currently comprises more than 1,600 cargo ships with a total tonnage of around 12 to 13 million DWT. However, foreign shipping companies still account for 95% of Vietnam’s export shipping market share, with Vietnam accounting for only 5%. In fact, most ships in Vietnam are over 15 years old, old technology is not suitable for transporting goods. Another shortcoming is that Vietnam’s naval structure is not properly developed. There is a surplus of small tonnage vessels while there is a shortage of large tonnage for international transport.

While many economic sectors have been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020 to date, the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry has thrived during and after the pandemic. Seizing the opportunity well, many Vietnamese shipbuilding companies have undergone major changes, made great strides, and are gradually entering the international market. Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry has built special ships, ships with a large deadweight tonnage of 50-60,000 tons, and is aiming to build ships of 110,000 tons.

“Our design consultants have been involved in a number of major shipbuilding projects in Vietnam, including: 17,500 tonne general cargo ships for export, built at Bach Dang Shipyard; “100,000 ton tonnage oil tankers were built at Dung Quat shipyard… All these products have been finished by VISEC with the best quality and meet all the strict requirements of the ship owners and the registry at home and abroad,” Minh affirmed.

According to experts, the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry is currently facing many difficulties. Due to the decline in the goods export market in 2023, Vietnamese shipowners do not dare to invest in newbuildings. In addition, many shipbuilding companies get into financial difficulties due to high investment debts with banks that have not been restructured; Bank credit for production is difficult.
