NGHE ON When Hau was convinced to invest in growing melon, the family and local people did not believe that they could earn hundreds of millions of dongs a year with just one acre of land (500 m2)…

Ever since I was hired, I’ve been infused with cantaloupe melon

Speaking to me in the membrane house where melons are grown, Mr. Vo Van Hau (born 1993) in Nghia An Township (Nghia Dan District, Nghe An Province) said: I am currently working as a mechanic to repair machines for melon farmers In “Down South,” he noted that any house that grows melons becomes rich very quickly. When Lan La asked about it, Hau decided to quit his job as a mechanic to work for gardeners growing melons in Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong.

Striving to work and learn for the future, Hau worked very hard, following and memorizing every step carefully, from planting to tending to harvesting the melons. He found that the melon is a clean fruit, grown to VietGAP standards, ensures food safety and hygiene, and is very cool and nutritious when eaten. So, at harvest time, the townsfolk drove out in cars to buy the entire garden.

Mr. Vo Van Hau (seated above) shared that while the profit is high, the difficulty in growing melons is the high investment and high technical requirements for cultivation. Photo: Ho Quang.

Growing melons is the most difficult because the initial investment is quite high, but two to three plants can be grown every year. Hau said, “Once I master the technique of growing and caring for melon, I think I’m a country person with a big country, so going back to the country to build a career in this profession will definitely win…”

In 2017, Hau was eagerly bringing his dream back to his hometown from the south and was determined to start a melon garden. It’s easy to say, but the preparation time takes a year. The first is to analyze and persuade the family. No one can believe that planting trees on just one hectare of land and can bring in hundreds of millions of dongs in just one year. Everyone said Hau was an imaginative dreamer.

Hearing this, Hau couldn’t lose his will. On the contrary, he quietly raised capital and then hired workers to pay for the greenhouse, install irrigation and tillage systems, and buy seeds. When it was impossible for the whole family to stop Haus’s work, everyone borrowed money for Hau to pay for things he couldn’t afford.

It was a lot of hard work and chaos, but then Hau also completed a 500m2 net house, including installing a drip irrigation system, which cost VND 150 million, and another 10 million to supply the seeds in the infirmary.

The country does not help the people, thanks to the good practice of cultivating melons in a methodical and correct technique, as well as the practical experience he gained during his time as a hired laborer for a melon grow house in the south, according to In the first year, Hau auf An area of 1 Sao (500 m²) of the melon cultivation house carried out two harvests, each harvesting 1.8 tons of fruit. The sale price this year was up to VND 45,000/kg, the total profit is considered to be amortized for the initial investment in the construction of a net house.

Thanks to home employment, many households participating in the Hau Nguyen Melon Cooperative have achieved incomes of hundreds of millions of dongs per year, something they could not believe before. Photo: Ho Quang.

Since the second year, Hau has also earned more than 100 million dongs growing melons in a 500 m² greenhouse. When the melon is harvested, traders buy up the entire garden in bulk. Realizing victory, Hau invested in a greenhouse in 2019 and expanded the melon garden to more than 1 hectare.

Because Hau grows melons with high economic efficiency, farmers in and out of the district regularly visit to learn about the model. With nothing to hide, people tell all about doing business with melons every time they see people coming home.

Earning hundreds of millions of Dong is not difficult

In October 2019, in accordance with the policy of the county and township people’s committees, Hau established the Hau Nguyen Melon Cooperative with Hau as director. Initially, 32 members of the district participated and the melon acreage registered by the members was 4 ha. All members of the cooperative were instructed by Hau on the construction of greenhouses and the techniques in the order of steps from soil preparation to growing to melon care trained.

Hau said that first of all, it is necessary to ensure that the greenhouse is closed by the four-sided mesh membrane to prevent insects from entering, but to ensure light for the plants to be suitable for photosynthesis. Soil preparation must be clean, porous, mixed with microorganic fertilizers, beds high and well drained. Plant trees at a distance of 40 cm and beds at a distance of 2 m from the beds. The drip irrigation system is aimed at each tree stump. When the tree blooms, along with cutting off the leaves and pressing the tops, honey bee hives are brought into the garden for pollination, and each tree leaves only one fruit to allow the tree to focus on nourishing the fruit.

At present, many places in Nghe An and Thanh Hoa are also looking forward to Hau sharing the technology of developing melons. Photo: Ho Quang.

Hau said the family’s melon garden has grown to 1.5 hectares so far, and 4 hectares belonging to the cooperative’s members have developed well. The initial cost of building a net house is VND 300 million/1,000 m2 (of which VND 50 million is funded from the district budget). The membrane house is used for up to 10 years before it has to be renewed.

Every year, Hau looks for a market to eat, so Hau Nguyen Melon Cooperative’s products are all bought by supermarkets and vendors. This year the price in the garden is 30,000 VND/kg. According to calculations, 1 Sao (500 m2) yields 1.8 tons of fruit/crop. If a family can harvest 3 crops per year, they can recoup the initial investment. Any household that grows and harvests 2 crops per year will only make it in a year and a half to pay it back. In the years that follow, gardeners only have to buy seeds, care for them and reap profits. At current productivity and price, assuming modestly 2 harvests per year, the efficiency derived from 1 ha of melons is not small.

Hau said that now he wholeheartedly supports the Hau Nguyen melon cooperative, he also needs to move to Quynh Luu District (Nghe An) and then to Thieu Son District (Thanh Hoa). Technology Transfer and Guide farmers to grow melons according to their needs.

Melons have a high value, but not everyone can invest in their cultivation, they must have sufficient financial capacity, technical level and a well-organized consumer market. Photo: TL.

Mr. Le Viet Also Hau. To guide growing techniques and look for markets for produce, I have successfully produced 1,000m² of melons, planted 2,500 plants in each crop and only 1 fruit weighing 1.5-1.8kg each. I have 45,000 VND per fruit I have produced, sold 2 crops per year and I have also made over 200 million VND in profit. There are many households in the cooperative that make even higher profits because I can do 3 harvests/year. 75 – 80 days.

The head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghia Dan District, Mr. Lam Van Thang, is enthusiastic: the melon of the Hau Nguyen cooperative is a very effective model, but not everywhere and everyone can do it due to the high investments required for it are Great Skills. High Farming. In addition, with a large-scale development, there may be a drop in price. Therefore, the district also has a plan for each municipality and region to focus on developing their own economic development models.

“Mr. Vo Van Hau, director of the Hau Nguyen Melon Cooperative, is truly a prime example of the rural youth’s good economic work, which has been praised by the district and the province. “Hau is a young party member, Nghia Dan District People’s Council Member, XX Term, 2021-2026 Term, selected by the district to report on good provincial-level production,” said Mr. Lam Van Thang, head of the Department of Agriculture and rural development. Nghia Dan district shared.
