Catimor Arabica coffee (coffee tea) has been grown in Quang Tri since 1994 and has quickly become the province’s main crop.

By the end of 2022, the province’s total coffee-growing area will be more than 3.9 thousand hectares, mainly in Huong Hoa District; The average yield is 11.5 quintals/ha, the multiplier production is almost 4.5 thousand tons. Coffee trees have created jobs and provided a stable livelihood for more than 8,000 households.

Huong Hoa Arabica coffee is famous for its delicious taste, has been awarded the “Khe Sanh” collective label, has 4 4-star OCOP products, and has joined the Vietnamese and global coffee value chain. In addition, foreign countries are interested and have spoken with cooperatives in Huong Hoa, 4 companies signed a contract to cooperate in the production and consumption of products, 1 contract to process Arabica coffee.

With the development of coffee cultivation, 34 coffee purchasing, pre-processing and processing units were also established and developed. However, only about 10% of production is pre-processed and sold by companies and cooperatives.

In recent years, manufacturing plants and cooperatives have started to enter some high-end markets such as Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia, albeit in small volumes.

Ms. Nguyen Hong Phuong, deputy director of the Quang Tri Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the coffee tree plays an important role in the socio-economic development strategy in the western part of Quang Tri, and contributes to eradicating hunger and reducing poverty. However, coffee production has many potential risks; unstable consumer market. The application of new technical advances is still limited. The increase in the area of ​​used coffee affects the productivity, yield and quality of coffee and reduces competitiveness in the market.

In recent times, in order to promote the coffee industry, the agricultural sector of Quang Tri has advised the provincial people’s committee to issue numerous guidelines to support the production related to the product consumption, in addition to the guidelines of the central government.

Quang Tri Province is actively working with departments and agencies to invite and attract companies to invest in and connect with coffee products.

Quang Tri’s goal is to maintain and stabilize the area of ​​5,000 hectares. ensure that at least 1,000 hectares of coffee are newly planted by 2026, of which 50 hectares of coffee are certified according to organic standards; Development of 60 ha of specialty coffee and tea in Huong Phung Township (Huong Hoa District). Quang Tri is committed to completing the replanting of ancient coffee varieties with a series of high-quality tea varieties by 2030, while ensuring technical standards.

“The conference is an opportunity for the agricultural sector and local authorities to listen to feedback from companies and producers, as well as ideas and suggestions from delegates to help improve the investment environment and policies. Policies to support the good implementation of the linking activities and stable and sustainable consumption of coffee products, which will help increase the income of coffee farmers in the coming period.

The Danish government has also decided to support Quang Tri with US$1.2 million to implement a coffee production project that does not cause deforestation. This is an opportunity for Quang Tri to further develop agriculture and forestry,” said Ms. Nguyen Hong Phuong, deputy director of Quang Tri’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
