According to Mr. Huynh Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee: In order to sustainably develop the rice industry by 2025, it is necessary to apply modern scientific and technical advances to production, thereby reducing costs and increasing productivity and profitability for farmers.

At present, Dong Thap has about 500,000 hectares, which cultivate 3 rice crops in one year, reaching over 3 million tons of rice per year. Dong Thap focuses on improving production efficiency for farmers by reducing fertilizer, medicine and seed costs, improving rice quality, increasing the area of certified varieties, high-quality varieties and aromatic specialty rice.

Dong Thap strives to increase profits for rice farmers and reaches 35-40%; Reducing the amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in rice production by at least 30%. Rapidly increasing the rate of mechanization in production, gradually switching from sowing with tools to the use of rice planters, increasing the degree of mechanization of machine sowing to 15% of the area.

At least 20% of the province’s rice acreage will have to use drones to spray pesticides. The aim is for the joint production of seed rice to reach more than 5,000 ha/year, the area for organic rice production to reach 600 ha by 2025. It is expected that by 2025, more than 42,000 hectares of rice will be given an area code.

According to Mr. Huynh Minh Tuan, in order to achieve the goals of improving rice production, the province also proposed 11 main tasks and solutions. This includes the organization of production, the renewal of the model of linking production and consumption and the development of the collective economy. Promoting the application of science and technology, digital transformation, the implementation of traceability, processing, post-harvest preservation, human resource development… are the main concerns of the province in rice cultivation.

In addition, Dong Thap will review current policies related to the agricultural sector from central to provincial levels. From there it is proposed to amend, adjust, replace and supplement new provincial policies to support the development of the rice industry in particular and the agricultural sector in general.

“In Dong Thap’s rice industry development plan, it is necessary to focus on the development of effective cooperatives and set up cooperatives based on the assembly hall, which is Dong Thap’s strength. Encouraging the development of associations into typical cooperatives representing farm households, developing the capacity of start-up companies, family businesses combining with consumer companies for cooperatives, gradual development of new companies, activities of sorting, pre-processing, preservation and direct sales.

Building a model of connecting communities, cooperatives and companies in the rice value chain,” emphasized Mr. Tuan.

Dong Thap applies data digitization technology, agricultural production and rural development reporting mode, collecting data during farming process, displaying forecast and warning, and uses it for source traceability from My Dong 2 Cooperative in Thap District muoi

The development of remote sensing technology combined with ground IoT helps in monitoring, monitoring and warning of rising and falling flood waters to plan appropriate agriculture. Manage, use and create farming-specific map data, manage the growing area from which report data is extracted, and monitor the situation of pests and natural enemies. In addition, this device also monitors greenhouse gas emissions and maintains a large database of dong thap farming geographical indications.
