In the winter-spring harvest of 2022 – 2023, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan in Tien My 2 Village, Vinh Lam Township, Vinh Linh District (Quang Tri) cooperated with Quang Tri Trading Corporation to plant 4 ha of ST25 rice variety organic rice . Another 16 households in Tien My Village, covering a total area of 14 hectares, are also participating in this program.

Participating households are supported by Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center with 50% of the cost of seeds, panels, and fertilizer and organic products. The Quang Tri Trade Corporation lends the rest to the farmers with payment deferrals until the end of the harvest.

Mr. Tran Can, director of Quang Tri Agricultural Advisory Center, said that after selecting a site to implement the model, the technical staff of Provincial Agricultural Advisory Center and Vinh Linh Agricultural Advisory Station in cooperation with Quang Tri Trading Corporation will organize two training sessions habe carry out the technical process of organic rice production using a tray-plating planting machine for the households involved in the model and neighboring households.

All stages of plowing, transplanting, spraying of inoculants and harvesting are mechanized. Farmers mainly deal with regulating water in fields, visit fields to detect pests and diseases to report to Quang Tri Trading Corporation technical staff.

It is calculated that Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center has assisted people with an amount of VND 13 million/ha (equivalent to 50% of the input value).

Mr Nguyen Van Tuan said rice had been sprayed with biological products by drones six times; In no case should you use inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. From the date of transplanting (January 9, 2023), the rice plants grew and developed well, with heavily tillering branches, few pests and diseases.

At the end of April 2023 (after 110 days of growth and development), Mr. Tuan harvested a trial and showed that the fresh rice yield was 3.5 quintals/sao (500 m2), which is 7 tons of fresh rice/ha.

If the purchase price of fresh rice in the field is VND 12 million/ton, farmers will earn VND 84 million/ha. Meanwhile, the total investment cost is over 47 million dongs, farmers still have a net profit of nearly 37 million dongs/ha/crop.

Compared to the control rice variety HC95 with conventional cultivation, organic rice farmers have production chains for more than 2 times the profitability.

“Rice cultivation has long been done in the traditional way using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but farmers are unaware of the pollution problem, which seriously affects the health of rice farmers and consumers. . Farmers are very enthusiastic now that there is a new cultivation method for clean products with high economic efficiency and the use of machinery in most stages of production,” said Tuan.

Mr. Le Dinh Dung, chairman of the Vinh Lam Township People’s Committee, said that there was a major hurricane in the township at the end of April. Some rice fields have fallen, but organic rice is still weathering the storm.

“The reality is that organic production helps rice plants grow stronger and more resilient to pests and extreme weather conditions. According to a survey of the agricultural sector, out of a total of 670 ha of wet rice in the entire municipality, 300 ha are suitable for organic rice production. Given the economic and environmental benefits of organic rice cultivation, we have set a goal of having 300 hectares of organic rice by 2030,” said Mr. Dung.

Aim to have 1,000 hectares of organic rice by 2025

“Quang Tri started preparing organic rice cultivation in 2017. At that time it was mainly about detoxifying the soil. To date, the entire province has more than 300 hectares of organic rice. According to the plan, by 2025 Quang Tri is aiming to reach 1,000 hectares of organic rice, which is one of the models to flesh out the province’s above goal.

Organic rice production is an inevitable direction that produces products that meet all three economic, social and environmental criteria. In the coming period, we will continue to urge companies to join the association and create large fields for organic rice production with a view to export destinations,” said Mr. Nguyen Phu Quoc, deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Quang Ninh tri .
