Right at the beginning of the lunar new year, Quy Mao, fishermen in the delta area of Trieu Lang Township, Trieu Phong County, Quang Tri Province, went out to fish for yams. The production of sweet potatoes this year is not as high as in previous years, but the price is so cheap that every fishing trip brings VND 1-2 million income to the fishermen here as well.
On the beach of Dorf 6, municipality of Trieu Lang, dozens of boats with a capacity of 9 to 24 hp crowd ashore every day in the early afternoon.
Just-landed potato fish was bought by traders at prices ranging from VND110.00 to VND150,000/kg depending on the day. The price of fish sold in markets ranges from 170,000 to 200,000 VND/kg.
The potato fishing season in Quang Tri usually starts with the first days of the lunar new year every year and usually ends at the end of February of the lunar calendar. The fishing boat in the municipality of Trieu Lang sets sail at dawn and returns every early afternoon. Many boats are full of fish, jellyfish… On average, each boat also brings back to sea 8-10 kg of fish per trip.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, 60, a fisherman in Trieu Lang Township, said that fishermen here went to sea from the 6th day of the lunar new year. Every early morning he goes out to sea with a second net on a 12 CV boat about 7-8 nautical miles from shore to catch fish. Many days his boat collects 30-40 kg of fish and potatoes; less than 7-8 kg per day.
“The first fish of the year is a blessing from heaven. We went out a few nautical miles, when we reached the fishing channel we called each other to notify each other to catch together. On average, a boat with 2 workers goes from early morning, returns at the beginning of every afternoon, releases 15 nets every 1 hour when hoisting, it also collects 8-10 kg of fish per day” – shared Mr. Ky.
