This growing method, known as aeroponics, takes less time and increases profits by up to 20%.
According to experts, these modern production techniques are widely used by potato farmers in India for greater yield efficiency. Thanks to these techniques, potato production is no longer dependent on the soil when only two combined resources, air and water, are needed. A better example of this approach is hydroponics, where the production of fruits, flowers and vegetables is grown in water without soil.
The Karnal Institute of Potato Technology and the Department of Horticulture of India have and promote this technique extensively. In this process, potato plants are prepared at a nursery and transplanted into an aeroponic system. It is formed from the top layer of soil where potatoes are grown with the help of water and nutrients.
The trial nursery was prepared by Indian agricultural experts with different varieties of potato plants for trial planting. Previously, the root system of the tree was pasteurized to completely eliminate the risk of fungal diseases. After that, the potato plants are grown on a large rack system, which is an aeroponic system at the age of 10-15 days, and then produces more tubers in a short time. .
Aeroponics is now very popular in various countries and has been approved as a new production method in India.
What is aeroponics?
Aeroponic technology, or aeroponic farming, is a new farming method. Accordingly, plants do not use soil (geoculture) or water (hydroponics), but rather grow in an atmosphere containing nutrient dust particles. These nutrients are responsible for providing the roots for normal growth and development.
Compared to other farming methods, aeroponics saves 95% fertilizer and reduces water use by 98% without the use of pesticides. Especially in the context of the scarcity of agricultural land and the risk of food insecurity due to climate change and the degradation of environmental resources, the aeroponic method takes up little cultivation area, since it can increase the year-round harvest as well as increase the crop yield by 45% through multi-layer intensive agriculture 75%
For plant varieties, aeroponics is considered a breakthrough in the field of clonal seed research and production, since the plant’s living environment is completely disease-free, without the use of pesticides.
According to scientists, this will be an important method of plant cloning of the 21st century because it can replace the tissue culture technique propagation methods by installing a sterilization filter system solution and air in the growth chamber and at the same time, it is a modern technology with the integration of biotechnology, informatics, new materials and automation technology.
Aeroponics allows the propagation of a variety of crops, the propagation cycle is much faster, the capacity is increased 30 times compared to traditional techniques, eliminating the complicated sterilization stage (environment, sample) in culture, scale, save labor, materials reduce costs.
Thanks to the closed loop from planting to harvesting, it saves water and nutrients for the plants, and at the same time can automatically control the timing of nutrient spraying, the plants grow quickly and produce a high yield, and control the environment.
Compared to the geotropic method, the use of aeroponics brings at least 2 times more yield, plants grow 1.5 times faster thanks to living in an artificial environment (plants grow in virtual time with 1 day) 24 hours of tree light corresponds to 3 days with 8 hours of natural light) because it does not depend on natural conditions, in particular dryness, drought…
Thanks to the aeroponic method, the yield of seed potatoes increased to 1,800-2,000 tubers/m² in China and 3,000-3,500 tubers/m² in Korea, while other methods only reached 300-500 tubers/m².
