The city of Hai Phong currently has 1,190 hectares of organic rice cultivation, of which 40 hectares of rice have been assessed and certified to meet organic standards.

Hai Phong is one of the places that dealt with and implemented organic farming models very early on. To date, organic farming has continuously increased in quantity and variety of products.

The rice area certified according to organic standards is mainly focused on the areas where mollusks are produced in combination with rice transplanting in areas where there are molluscs farming areas, such as Ngu Phuc, Ngu Doan, Kien Quoc, etc. Kien District Thuy) and municipalities of Tien Lang district.

Due to the characteristics of the rice field – far from the specialized rice fields, rice is grown 1 crop per year, the fertilizer uses 100% organic fertilizers and no pesticides, so the rice field has high economic value.

The rice yield cultivated on the field is not high, only about 45-50 quintals/ha, 2/3 of the conventionally cultivated field, but the income from sorghum is 15-20 times higher than the income from rice. On average, 1 hectare of paddy field corresponds to 300-500 kg of sorghum, the income from sorghum is 200 million VND/ha (the price is 400,000-450,000 VND/kg).

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, the owner of a rice-growing swamp in Ngu Phuc Township, Kien Thuy District, said his family had teamed up with Hai Au Viet Company to plant ST25 rice variety, which is very suitable and beneficial for the Whole be family and rice.

The centipede can only live in clean environmental conditions and 100% organic material, so it needs to ensure both water and fertilizer for its rearing. With the excess amount of organic fertilizer, it is added to the rice plants and creates a good growing environment for the centipede when the rice is transplanted.

“In fact, we have transplanted ST25 rice in the field in the past, and got a relatively high yield, the rice is very safe, tasty, and is highly appreciated by consumers. Field rice is consumed, processed and eaten by Hai Au Viet Company at a high price in many markets, especially Hanoi market.

Aware of the role, position and importance of safe and organic agricultural production for the health of producers, consumers and the protection of the environment, many places have promoted organic rice cultivation.

Currently, Hai Phong City is developing an organic rice cultivation area planning program, focusing on a number of potential development areas such as An Lao, Tien Lang, Kien Thuy and Vinh Bao districts.

According to research, the organic rice products market is mainly driven by the signing of an off-take agreement between producers and companies such as: Hai Au Viet Company, Truong Company Phu Quy, Thuy Huong Agricultural Service Business Cooperative… with a price 10-15% higher than that mass production price.

At present, the investment cost of producing organic agricultural products, including organic rice, is higher, while the yield is equal to or lower than that of mass production, the production is not stable, resulting in the need to maintain and expand production faces many difficulties.

Therefore, the link between production and consumption of agricultural products must continue to be considered in order to increase product quality and value, and help ensure product consumption at stable prices for people.

It can be said that the application of CAP and organic production standards has changed the perception of producers and consumers regarding food safety.

In Hai Phong, although organic farming has a certain share, the production scale is too small or only implemented in the organic direction, and some experimental models are still very limited compared to the potential and demand.

In order to have the orientation towards the development of a sustainable, high quality and effective organic agriculture, it is necessary to recognize and evaluate the production practices of the past years in order to propose specific development solutions in the future.

Mr. Luu Van Thuy, vice chairman of Kien Thuy District People’s Committee, said, “Through the pilot production and trial cultivation of ST25 rice in a field in Ngu Phuc township, he has shown high economic efficiency and suitable soil for rice varieties .

The schemes have been supported by the state and companies have also invested capital to invest and build sluices under the dike to regulate the water.

This rice variety is suitable for the Kien Thuy field in general and the Ngu Phuc community in particular. The fact that farmers have grown them has shown very good productivity, efficiency and delicious rice.
