SON LA The biomass corn production model with the LCH9 corn variety from the Maize Research Institute in Son La helps farmers to get a feel for the way of thinking of a market-oriented production of biomass corn.

With the implementation of the central agricultural expansion project in 2022, the summer-autumn harvest of 2022 in Son La, the Animal Feed Plant Department (Morning Research Institute) has built and implemented a model of biomass corn production as green fodder for farmers. 2023. The corn variety produced in the model is LCH9.

The model was used in the summer-autumn harvest of 2022 on an area of 10 ha in Tuong Thuong Township (Phu Yen District, Son La). Green life Vietnam Investment and Trade Co.,Ltd. the product assumes a consumption for the citizen. The households participating in the model authorize the 01 household as the head of the group to sign a contract to allocate the product consumption to the purchasing unit at 950 VND/kg, purchasing volume 272 tons.

The results show that the LCH9 corn variety has good drought tolerance, suitable as animal feed, the average biomass yield in the model is 50.5 tons/ha, which is an income of more than 50.5 tons/ha, 48 million VND/ha /harvest . Since the efficiency of biomass corn production is 15-20% higher than that of bulk corn production, and at the same time it is possible to realize 3-4 harvests of biomass corn/year per unit area, the income for biomass corn producers increases.

In addition, biomass corn production also helps improve the efficiency of agricultural production programs along the value chain by fully utilizing all parts of the corn plant and using fewer pesticides compared to other agricultural products (corn harvest from biomass is shorter due to harvesting at wax maturity) .

The introduction of LCH9 biomass corn variety has short growing time (about 85-90 days, can make 3-4 harvests/year), quick harvest, clean field for farmers to have space for sowing and some leafy greens to serve grow the Lunar New Year as well as produce the following crops.

Thanks to the technical package synchronization, the high biomass yield in the model is superior to the local biomass maize production.

The implementation of commercial production of biomass corn coupled with product consumption also creates a connection between local businesses and people to form a chain of production, supply and consumption of agricultural products for farmers. At the same time, to facilitate people’s access to the method of developing a biomass corn plan according to market demand, especially access to some technical advances applied in biomass corn production (silage, making pellets, etc.), thereby launching an initiative to Provision of raw materials is created and feed for domestic livestock, which is the basis for improved profitability in maize cultivation.

Using the model, the Department of Animal Feed Facilities (Morning Research Institute) also organized a technical training course on biomass maize production for farmers in Tuong Thuong Township (Phu Yen District), with farmers from more than 120 participating farm households participating in the model. As a result, people in the model area have mastered the knowledge and applied it to build a technical model for planting, tending, preserving and processing high-quality corn biomass. This is the basis for the development of biomass corn production in Phu Yen District and contributes to the expansion of biomass corn production area.

The significant increase in model efficiency compared to seed corn is also the motivation to help local corn farmers to recognize the benefits of applying the biomass corn variety cultivation technique and thereby pass them on to the farmers.

As part of the process of implementing the biomass corn production model in Tuong Thuong Township (Phu Yen District), the implementing units also recommend that the locality should continue to develop mechanisms and policies to reduce the cultivation of biomass corn for food and livestock on an inefficient basis Promote rice cultivation areas, fallow land and paddy land without water.
