One of the best features of futon furniture is the fact that the covers can be changed or washed depending on the style and fabric.

Futon covers are designed to withstand the force of machine washing and come in a choice of prints, solid colors and sizes. While these washable covers can be mixed and matched to add some variety to home decor, the key feature is that they are easy to keep clean. Unlike regular upholstered furniture, which may need a professional cleaning, the occasional mess from kids or pets isn’t a problem with machine washable covers.

Typically, a machine washable futon cover has two large zippers. The full coverage looks like a large sheet of denim or other material and has a seam down the middle. To install, unfold the cover, line up the mattress at the seam, and then fold the cover over so the entire futon mattress is covered. There are two zippers, one on each corner. Close the cover and that’s all you need to put a cover on a futon mattress. When it’s time to wash, simply unzip the futon cover and pull it away from the mattress.

Especially after a few turns in the washing machine, it can happen that the zippers on your futon cover get caught. Trying to get the zip to work can be frustrating.

It may be tempting, but don’t try to force the jammed zipper as pulling too hard could accidentally snap the zipper tab or destroy the teeth. After the teeth have been coated, try opening and closing the device a few times. This usually makes the zipper work smoother. If a candle isn’t available, a bar of hand soap works, although not quite as well.

Unless the issue is “sticky” due to age, dirt, or other factors, a cord or fabric from the futon cover could be caught in the zipper assembly. Carefully remove the jammed material or cord blocking the zipper. Usually the inner fabric gets caught, so tweezers can be useful to grab the material or thread. Gently pull the liner, thread, or other material caught in the device away from the zipper. A gentle tug will work provided the zip tab is not pulled. Forcibly pushing the zipper tab up or down will make the problem worse. Depending on how much the futon fabric or thread is embedded in the zipper unit, teeth may come loose when the material is removed. Gently push the zipper teeth back into place and the zipper should work. It’s helpful to check the length of the zipper and slide the lining away from the zipper to avoid future snagging. Receive and the problem should be resolved.

Despite the fact that they don’t cost much, machine washable futon covers are quite durable and their zippered units are sturdy. Nonetheless, it can be useful to have a few spare futon covers in case the zipper breaks.
