Currently there are 146 companies across the country producing glued panels with a capacity of about 570,000 m3/year. The common types of plywood in Vietnam are made from planted woods such as acacia, eucalyptus, melaleuca, rubber, pine, etc.

COMPLETE WOOD PRODUCTION STRUCTURE

At Tan Thanh Phu Trading, Production and Service Co., Ltd in the Binh Nguyen Industrial Cluster (Binh Son District, Quang Ngai), occupying an area of up to 4.67 hectares, there are huge warehouses filled with lumber, plywood was not exported. The woodworking workshop with hundreds of machines is also at a standstill, without a single worker.

Ms. Luu Phung Linh Tien, director of Tan Thanh Phu Company, told us that usually at this time is the peak of the wood processing export industry and the plywood market is very busy. “

However, this year is the complete opposite, we have had to stop our work since September 2022. Hundreds of billions of dongs of corporate capital are frozen in 800 m3 of plywood inventory. In addition, there is still a large amount of unprocessed lumber that has not been processed into composite wood. The company had to lay off up to 80% of its employees because there were absolutely no orders at that time,” Ms. Tien said.

In Ho Nai District (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province), there is a large-scale sawmill village to meet the need for raw materials for production and export to the southern region, but now there are many households in the handicraft village that return to the factory Stop production. Typically, Moc Quyet Thang Co., Ltd (Zone 8, Long Binh, Bien Hoa, Dong Nai) is currently in a state where plywood export orders are completely “frozen”.

Ms. Nguyen Hoang Ly, director of Moc Quyet Thang Company, said that the glued laminated timber market has been stable over the past 10 years. Especially during the Covid-19 epidemic, the plywood market developed very well, there were times when the production was not available for sale in time and there were no stocks of raw materials.

In the first 11 months of 2022, however, there was a continuous situation of “falling” orders and declining performance. Laminated wood production is said to make tables, chairs, cabinets and beds for export to the US and EU, but now these markets are going into an economic recession, causing laminated wood production to become ‘choked’.

SHOP “SIGHTING” WAITING FOR HEALTH

According to the companies, 1.7-1.8 m3 of sawn timber is required for 1 m3 of finished timber. Not only is it an important source of raw materials for domestic furniture production, but for many years laminated wood has been an export product, bringing in a good source of foreign exchange and accounting for more than 3% of the total export value of the country wood and engineered wood industry.

The export value of plywood reached USD 332.7 million in 2019, nearly USD 360 million in 2020. The heyday of glulam is around 2019-2020. At this time, if lumber costs VND 3.1-3.5 million/m3, the price of plywood is VND 10-14 million/m3. In 2021, the export price of glued laminated timber will range from 850 to 1,500 USD/m3 (depending on product quality).
