Awaken the economic potential of the garden
Regarding the beauty of Quang’s landscape, it is impossible not to mention the Tien Phuoc midland. This place meets the beauty of the river, mountains, lush green gardens and old houses captivating people’s hearts. Here, under the peaceful backdrop of the village, people’s lives are easy and simple, but no less prosperous and fulfilled.
These results are the entire process of the continuous efforts of the government and the people in the implementation of the project to develop horticulture, agriculture and ecotourism with characteristics of the Quang Nam Midland Region. Period 2017 – 2025 (referred to as Project 548) initiated by the People’s Committee of Tien Phuoc District.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Anh, vice chairman of the Tien Phuoc District People’s Committee, recalled before the birth of Project 548 and shared that these local people have a long gardening tradition. Over the years, the gardens have been renovated, upgraded, restored, occupying a particularly important position that determines the production, income and life of the majority of the local population.
The Garden of Tien Phuoc is structured in a multi-tree, multi-child, multi-storey ecological garden style with a variety of plants and animals of economic value, including special plants of Tien Phuoc and Quang Ninh B. Pepper, Lon Bon, Thanh Tra, Thu, durian, mangosteen…
“However, the development of horticulture and rural economy only stops with production. The model of linking product consumption has not yet been developed, the level of investment in intensive agriculture, the application of mechanization and the application of science and technology have not been focused. This leads to low productivity and quality of agricultural products, which reduces competitiveness,” said Mr. Anh.
With potential and advantages, along with a long tradition, Tien Phuoc District has found over the years that horticulture is the strength, the commercial sector is the spearhead of the place. The provincial people’s committee has developed and issued many programs, projects and plans to effectively implement this orientation. The most prominent result comes from Project 548.
In this program there are many mechanisms and strategies for direct post-investment support to households, cooperatives and businesses, such as: E.g.: training courses on the transfer of scientific and technical advances; plant varieties and materials; improvement of the garden plot; irrigation system; construction of small irrigation systems; Traffic in the village … to build a model of a farm, a house, a model of growing fruit trees, industrial plants, medicinal plants and beautifying the garden with green, clean and beautiful criteria …
In general, the support mechanisms under Project 548 are specific, practical, implemented and effectively promoted by people. Only in 2 years (2018 – 2019), the provincial budget has supported Tien Phuoc District to implement Project 548 with 20 billion VND.
The district people’s committee also established the Executive Committee of Project 548, the Evaluation Council and the Acceptance Council, led by the vice chairman of the district people’s committee, based on the annually allocated resources and the order of priority of the places at the local level, the district-level Evaluation Council evaluates and approves the plan for each budget for implementation.
In addition, non-business capital and infrastructure investment capital for the commercial development of gardens and farms in the area also increased significantly. Much traffic and irrigation work was invested to facilitate circulation, transport goods, and provide water for the crops, actively supporting the economic development of gardens, farms, and the construction of production areas.
Power from Project 548
Until now, while strolling along the communities of Tien Tho, Tien Ky, Tien Canh, Tien Chau, Tien Ha… (Tien Phuoc District) it is not hard to see the lush, fruit-laden orchards planted in rows and straight lines are planted. . A fresh, fragrant atmosphere of fruits is what one can feel when coming to this country.
The garden is more than 1 ha wide with all kinds of fruit trees like candy, mangosteen, jackfruit, banana… is the result that Mr. Pham Van Tuyet (resident in Hoi An Village, Tien Chau Township, Tien Phuoc District) persistently has renovated for many years due to the horticultural development orientation of the district.
From decades-old fruit trees in his home garden, Mr. Tuyen was donated VND 15 million under Project 548 by the Tien Phuoc District People’s Committee in 2019. With this amount, together with the guidance of the technical staff, he artistically worked out garden decorations, planted hundreds more bananas, mangosteen, durian, areca, peppers … in the direction of mixed cultivation.
Thanks to the fertile soil and the right fertilization, his garden grew quickly. “Each season has a different tree species to harvest. High-quality trees like Bon Bon also yield around 4 tons in a good year, and mangosteen trees can produce a few quintals, not to mention harvesting hybrids from other plants. In general, the income from the orchard is more than enough to support family life,” says Mr. Tuyet happily.
Mr. Thai Nguyen Khoa (resident in Tien Ky Town, Tien Phuoc District) focused on the development of a single tree, the mangosteen. Currently, Mr. Khoa’s family has more than 100 mangosteen trees harvested in his 1 hectare garden. In order to increase the value of this crop, Mr. Khoa intervened to take measures to produce fruit at the end of the year out of season with growers in the south.
“My garden has about 70-80% of the fruit trees every November. At this time, the selling price of mangosteen is very high, ranging from 110,000 to 130,000 VND/kg, almost double the peak time. As a result, like last year, my mangosteen garden has an output of more than 2 tons, income of VND 240 million, minus the expenses, bringing the family income of more than VND 200 million,” Mr. Khoa confided.
Project 548 not only focuses on the development of horticulture, but also supports people to renovate their homes and landscapes to develop tourism. The most famous of them is the system of old houses with hundreds of years in Loc Yen village (Tien Canh commune). With the ancient and rustic beauty of ancient Vietnamese villages, Loc Yen Ancient Village alone has about 10,000 visitors each year.
According to the Tien Phuoc District People’s Committee, the total funding from Project 548 to help people up to now after 5 years is about VND 650 billion. In the district, 724 households decorate their gardens. The garden area of the entire district reached 5,882 ha, an increase of 561 ha compared to 2015. The garden area was renovated, the plant structure made sense, the profitability was 3,984 ha.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Anh, vice chairman of the Tien Phuoc District People’s Committee, said that today’s change is due to the trust and support of the people in the municipalities for the Project 548 project being pursued. Since then, it has gradually changed the traditional agricultural way, gradually become wealthy from its own garden, and created a strong impetus for the development of agricultural industry in Tien Phuoc District.
“However, reality shows that natural disasters and epidemics in recent years have also significantly affected agricultural production and the development of people’s horticulture. Therefore, in order to increase efficiency and reduce risks, in the coming period we will build models, train and transfer technical advances in crop production, such as in the dry season. At the same time, building a fall protection model on key fruit trees to respond to climate change is a learning point for people’s application,” said Mr. Hung.
The value of gardening and farming income of Tien Phuoc district has increased by an average of VND 60 million/ha (in 2015) to VND 120 million/ha (2020). The income from horticulture and agriculture will increase by an average of VND 30 million/household (in 2015) to VND 50 million/household (in 2020). The share of horticulture and agriculture in 2020 will reach VND390,412 million, accounting for 35.6% of the total value of agricultural output in 2020.
