In the past, the rice variety TBR39 has been experimentally grown in many different areas in the Mekong Delta, especially in saline soils, or cultivated according to the rice-shrimp model. In the 2022 summer-autumn rice harvest, many farmers in Ca Mau or Vinh Thuan Peninsula, An Bien, Hon Dat (Kien Giang) were surprised by the newly launched “Miss Queen” of rice produced by TBR39 rice variety Company: ThaiBinh Seed Limited – Dong Thap produces and has been fascinated by many farmers because of its outstanding properties compared to other rice varieties.

After ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company’s TBR39 variety was recognized as a rice variety that produces delicious rice products and won the first prize in the 3rd Vietnam Delicious Rice Contest in 2022, more and more farmers know about TBR39 rice variety and expand production in winter-spring harvest 2022 – 2023 in southern provinces/cities.

The TBR39 variety has a growing time of 100 – 110 days, strong tillering, good resistance to explosion and leaf scorch. The average yield is between 5 and 5.5 tons/ha, 10-20% higher than seasonal control. With good land and good farmers, the yield can be between 6.5 and 7.5 tons/ha. In addition, TBR39 also gives head rice ratio of 45-55%, rice grain length of 7.7-7.8mm, amylose content of 16-17%, beautiful and elongated rice grains. In particular, the rice variety TBR39 grows quite well on acidic and saline soils and is suitable for rice-shrimp areas.

Thanks to good growth, good resistance to pests and diseases, farmers growing TBR39 can significantly reduce fertilizer and pesticide costs compared to other varieties. TBR39 rice is always sold at a slightly higher price than other rice, ranging from a few hundred dongs to thousands of dongs/kg, and is bought by traders very quickly.

Mr. Tran Thanh Long in Dong Thai Township, An Bien District (Kien Giang) first learned about the TBR39 variety and practiced the cultivation with 5 workers according to the rice shrimp model, which just harvested with a yield of almost 1 ton/ton (worker 1,300 m2), this is a high yield and a record for him compared to previous rice varieties he has grown.

Mr. Long excitedly shared, “Cultivating TBR39 is happiest in the rice stage with few pests and diseases, little chemical fertilizers, only bio-organic fertilizers/medicines, but the rice is hardy and less prone to fall. After harvesting, rice is sold to traders in the field at the price of 8,400-8,500 VND/kg, after deducting all costs, the profit is over 6 million VND/worker.

Mr. Long said that due to growing crops on shrimp farms, he can only grow one crop of rice per year, so after harvesting the winter rice crop, farmers improve the land to obtain salt water for shrimp farming. “Next year, at the beginning of the rainy season, farmers will harvest shrimp and then continue to plant rice. I will continue to expand the cultivation of TBR39 and introduce many people to the TBR39 rice variety that is scheduled to go into production this year,” said Mr. Long excitedly.

And Mr. Le Van Doi, from Khanh Lam commune, U Minh district (Ca Mau), who has 3 hectares of paddy fields, said: “In the past I have grown many different varieties of market-name rice, but recently I tested rice the Rice variety TBR39. It must be said that good rice in Vietnam must also include the quality of the rice. The cooked rice is very flexible, fragrant and still delicious to eat chilled. This variety has a high price of rice, reaching more than VND 7,800/kg, much higher than other rice varieties in this region.

According to farmers’ assessments, despite the disadvantages and heavy rains, the TBR39 rice variety produced in the summer-autumn crop of 2022 is less prone to falling and less prone to germinating on cotton. The length of the cotton is over 30cm, the average number of rice grains is more than 200 seeds/inflorescence. That partly proved the appeal of this new “Miss” in the Mekong Delta.

It can be said that the TBR39 variety is quite profitable compared to the varieties produced in the Mekong Delta. With these outstanding advantages, the pure rice variety TBR39 will occupy the main structure in the Mekong Delta in the near future, especially the rice-shrimp area provinces such as Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Soc Trang. These will be the provinces that have many advantages in developing high-quality rice that meets export standards.
