In order to limit and minimize the generation of plastic waste from agricultural production and to prevent and avoid the harmful effects of plastic waste from agricultural production, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Ministry of Science and Technology) on November 23 in Thai Binh. Agriculture and Rural Development), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thai Binh, held a rally on the theme of “propaganda to reduce, collect, sort and reuse plastic waste in agriculture”.
Agricultural production has made great achievements in recent years, expanding production, applying high technology, organic, environmentally friendly, ensuring biosecurity and disease security, using resources effectively, adapting to climate change, meeting high food quality and safety requirements for self-consumption and export.
However, agricultural production has also left a significant impact on the environment and generated waste, particularly plastic waste, according to Ms Nguyen Giang Thu, deputy director of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. According to the National State of Environment Report 2020, it is estimated that more than 438,000 kg of packaging and bottles containing pesticides are collected, of which the destruction rate accounts for 79%.
The “Against Plastic Waste” movement has been active in many places in recent times and has achieved positive results. Thai Binh is a pioneer province and has made many outstanding achievements. Some models such as “Clean Field – Pesticide Packaging Collection”; “Segregation and treatment of household waste”; “Restrict the use of plastic bags”… has attracted participation from local people and brought many practical benefits. Quynh Phu district is a typical place for participation in the above movements.
“The Quynh Hai Township People’s Committee has carried out activities to maintain sanitation and protect the environment in every home, school, residential community, production area, green and clean movements and created, planting beautiful trees and constructing flower paths held regularly. Many activities have received wide response from the people, so the whole people can join forces with authorities at all levels to implement environmental sanitation, thereby contributing to the protection of the province’s environment,” said Quynh Hai Municipal People’s Committee Chairman (photo : VNA ) Quynh Phu District), informed Mr. Do Cong Chuan.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Do Cong Chuan called for the attention and active participation of mass organizations, authorities at all levels, socio-political organizations and the whole people to continue implementing the solutions to protect the environment with some priorities such as:
– Monitoring the use of single-use plastic products, plastic bags for the environment and human health; Buildings, improving operational efficiency, replicating self-management models of environmental protection, on-site plastic waste collection, classification and treatment.
– Regularly and regularly organize military campaigns to respond to environmental cleanup movement in fields and canals. Every citizen continues to respond and change the habit of using non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products in shopping, daily life and agricultural production, using environmentally friendly products.
– Party committees at all levels continue to pay attention, guide and direct the implementation of the movement, take responsibility and set an example for each party member in their residence.
Regarding some solutions to reduce plastic waste and raise people’s awareness of limiting the use of plastic production materials, Mr. Do Cong Chuan said, “Towards production and high income value for people, because Quynh Hai place is a Area specializing in vegetable cultivation, the community people’s committee is keen to guide people to safe production.
“We promoted the IPM program, promoted education, put the IPM program into practice, the organic fertilizer production program, increased the income value for production participants. About the use of fertilizers, pesticides, we now use microbiological materials that reduce toxins to drugs to shorten the isolation time, thereby ensuring product safety standards,” said Mr. Chuan.
According to Mr. Chuan, the air in Quynh Hai’s vegetable growing area has been seriously polluted in the past due to the use of highly toxic pesticides, even banned drugs. But now, in the territory of the municipality no longer banned drugs, as well as drugs that cause insecurity for herbal products.
Regarding field production, when applying technology, people used products like nylon to cover them before planting. In order to reduce the use of plastic, the Quynh Hai Municipality People’s Committee has mandated the use of nylon with long life and good durability, which can be used in production for 2-3 years before needing to be replaced. Every time they change, people collect and process them.
“In the coming period, we will strengthen solutions to treat plastic waste in the post-production environment, not letting the waste go into the canals and fields, but creating a process that fully completes the treatment and collection.
We collected the shell and packaging of pesticides every 3 months and commissioned a waste treatment company. We have built storage tanks and delivered monthly to collection teams, also on site, and then transported to the community central landfill, then when the company returns to collect, transported and handed over for the company,” said Mr. Do Cong Chuan.
