Vo Huu Thoai, director of the Southern Fruit Tree Institute, said: The Southern Fruit Institute’s mission is to research and solve scientific and technological problems related to fruit trees, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants for farmers in southern provinces and cities. In the period 2018 – 2022, the institute will be assigned a task within the National Science and Technology Program; 11 themes and projects at ministerial level; 1 central agricultural advisory project; 1 seed project; 3 international cooperation projects and 12 regular tasks by function.
In the work of crossing and creating new plant varieties, the institute has crossed and recognized 22 new plant varieties by 2022 through hybridization and mutation treatment techniques, including 13 fruit tree varieties. In addition, the Institute has also selected and recognized 6 local and imported fruit tree varieties.
In addition, in order to adapt to unfavorable environmental conditions, the Institute has chosen to create many plant varieties as rootstocks that are salt tolerant, drought tolerant and alum tolerant.

In particular, the institute has also researched and built over 50 technological processes for the production of varieties; intensive cultivation of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers; integrated pest control… in which 15 typical technological and technical processes are widely used in recent times. Through technology transfer activities, the institute has transferred new varieties to over 45,000 ha of acreage; Transfer of advanced cultivation techniques to the southern provinces covering an area of more than 60,000 ha…

Regarding these limitations, Dr. Cooperation between companies in research and breeding is still limited due to the long breeding period and the difficult protection of copyrights. Infrastructure and laboratories are missing and outdated.
