Effectively supporting rural restructuring in Ninh Thuan

dr Mai Van Hao, director of the Nha Ho Institute, said the institute is a unit of the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) based in Ninh Thuan province.

In the period 2017 – 2022, in close coordination with ministries, institutes and departments, offices and branches of Ninh Thuan Province, the institute has implemented 21 scientific and technological tasks (projects, scientific topics) in the surrounding provinces, in which there are 3 state-level tasks , 10 tasks at ministerial level, 8 tasks at state level focusing on conservation and preservation of genetic resources; selection and breeding (8 tasks); Researching and applying high technology and advanced technology to the production of key crops of the region (3 tasks on grapes, apples, asparagus); Research and development of crop pest control methods, application of technical and high-tech advances in seed production and development, commercial production of a range of crops (9 tasks).

according to dr Mai Van Hao, grapes are one of the most important crops in Ninh Thuan Province, the institute has carried out activities to collect, conserve and utilize grape genetic resources. It focused on the construction of a garden for the preservation of the Rebgen Fund, conserving 130 samples of fresh grape varieties, 40 samples of wine grape varieties, 31 samples of seedless grape varieties and 9 samples of grafted grape varieties.

In addition, the institute is also building a key orchard with an area of 0.45 ha for grape varieties. Besides, Nha Ho Institute also cultivates and preserves genetic resources of some plant varieties such as apple, mango, jackfruit, longan, custard apple, guava, grapefruit, dragon fruit, rice, corn…

In breeding work, Nha Ho Institute has carried out activities of studying, selecting and developing native varieties of glutinous rice. So far, the institute has recovered the typical native glutinous rice variety of Bac Ai district (Ninh Thuan) with many outstanding advantages. In addition, the institute also cooperates with corn research institutes, companies to evaluate, test and organize the breeding of new hybrid corn for the production of commercial corn and biomass corn.

Rice is the main crop, so Nha Ho Institute has coordinated with other institutes to select cultivars that grow well and are suitable for Ninh Thuan’s ecological conditions, have good resistance to pests and diseases and, as a prerequisite, have good potential for have a high yield to introduce and transfer good varieties for production.

For vines and fruit trees, from the results of genetic resource collection and preservation activities, Nha Ho Institute has introduced a number of promising vine varieties for development, including 3 varieties of edible grapes, fresh (NH01-152, NH01-16, NH01 -96), 2 grape varieties (NH02-97 and NH02-137) and 1 seedless grape variety (NH04-102). In addition, the institute has also selected and added a number of suitable fruit tree varieties such as mango, early Thai jackfruit, chewing apple, longan and guava.

Linking scientific advances to plant transformation

According to Dr. Mai Van Hao continue to select high quality rice and corn varieties in the coming period; Propagation and development of a number of strong and specific fruit trees in Ninh Thuan Province. Also to build first class orchards for fruit trees; Selection of high quality large biomass grass varieties, sorghum varieties, biomass maize varieties…

At the same time, the institute continues to promote the research and application of high technology, mechanization, automation, application of appropriate and effective processing and preservation technologies for agricultural products to form large-scale production areas, in a chain to meet domestic consumption and export demand. Develop and produce crops using eco-friendly products, manufactured to VietGAP standards, organic…

At the meeting, Mr. Le Huyen, Vice Chairman of the Ninh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee, praised and appreciated the proactive and creative spirit and recognized the Nha Ho Institute’s past scientific research achievements. Through appropriate research topics and works close to local reality, plant varieties with high economic value have been created that help to effectively support agricultural production in the province.

Mr. Le Huyen hoped that the Nha Ho Institute would continue to research and improve the quality of standard varieties, provide technical support and help farmers expand the production scale of strong crops related to the development of tourism. Relevant departments, branches and communities should increase farmland inspection and mobilize people to boldly change culture accordingly.

At the same time, leverage central government support and flexibly use the local budget to help farmers implement and scale up effective production models. Focus on connecting businesses to the consumption of products to help people feel confident in manufacturing and increase income.

Previously, Mr. Le Huyen and other departments and agencies visited Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tri’s viticulture model NH01-152 and new grape varieties with high economic value in Lang Ngua Village, Nhon Son Township (Ninh Son). This is a household selected by the Nha Ho Institute to grow NH01-152 grape variety and transfer technology in an area of 2.5 sao. Last time, despite the persistent rain, grapes were still being harvested and sold at very high prices, raking in billions of Dong.

The Nha Ho Institute has focused on pest control research and applied technical and high-tech advances in breeding. Development of technical processes for grape varieties that are suitable for red wine production.
