According to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Affairs Sub-department of Phu Yen, from August 4, 2022 to August 17, 2022 in Phu Hoa, Song Hinh, Tay Hoa, Tuy An and Dong Hoa districts, farmers working in the above-mentioned locality acquired 36 bottles NAVET-ASFVAC African swine fever vaccine from Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company (Navetco), including 900 doses at Phu Yen Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Stations via injection of its pigs.

After 2-7 days of injection, the pigs started to get sick with the following symptoms: fever, loss of appetite, children could not walk, pale bodies… City has 609 pigs, the vaccinated pigs are 2 months old or older. After vaccination, the total number of sick pigs was 542, of which 297 died, 186 were treated and 59 recovered.

In light of the above situation, on August 18, 2022, the Phu Yen Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department stopped supplying vaccines to registered farmers in the region. On Aug. 19, 2022, employees at Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company, maker of the NAVET-ASFVAC vaccine, along with the Phu Yen Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine Subdivision, took two blood samples from sick pigs in the household of Mr. Be Hoa Quang Township Nam (Phu Hoa District) was dispatched to investigate the cause of the disease.

Currently, the Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company is working with the authorities to determine the cause of the problems in pigs vaccinated against African swine fever. On August 24th, 2022, the delegation of the Animal Health Office took some samples from diseased pigs to investigate the cause.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine Subdivision of Phu Yen, from August 19, 2022 to now, the representative of Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company has coordinated with the place to monitor the situation of vaccinated pigs for a specific handling.

Phu Yen Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Subdepartment has directed district and city animal husbandry and veterinary services to continue to provide extensive information to ranchers to stop using the NAVET-ASFVAC African swine fever vaccine pending new announcements from specialized agencies .

For dead pigs to be destroyed according to the regulations, the authorities in Phu Yen continue to guide farmers towards the treatment of sick pigs, mainly to strengthen resilience and continue treatment, and continue to monitor and supervise the surrounding farm households.

At the same time, properly organize the disinfection and disinfection work of the breeding environment, and promote and mobilize the farmers, when the pigs show signs of illness, to report to the authorities immediately, and not to sell them when the pigs were sick.

After a review in Phu Yen province, the Department of Animal Health (MARD) initially concluded that this site was not selected nor included in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s policy documents, the Department of Animals’ guidance on pilot injection . However, from August 4 to 17, 2022, people in Phu Hoa, Song Hinh, Tay Hoa, Tuy An districts and Dong Hoa city bought 36 vials of vaccine, equivalent to 900 doses of vaccine, and returned home for injections pigs without Guidance and supervision by veterinary authorities resulted in 297 deaths (49%).
