In implementation of Prime Minister’s Resolution No. 611/QD-TTg of June 1, 2023 approving the Vietnamese ginseng development program by 2030 aiming at 2045, Quang Nam Province has related sectors and Nam Tra My District People’s Committee with the Tasked with developing a plan to implement the Vietnamese ginseng development program by 2030 aiming at 2045 in Nam Tra My District.

The overall goal of the program is that Quang Nam Province build and develop Ngoc-Linh ginseng into a raw material with high economic value, branded as a national product, and soon stabilize the people’s economy and move towards concentrated goods with scale, Planning and development developed into a stable raw material supply area; Make Ngoc Linh Ginseng an important raw material for economic development, contribute to rapid and sustainable poverty alleviation, and stabilize the lives of ethnic minorities in Nam Tra My District; At the same time, primary forests and watershed forests will be protected, and an entire Ngoc Linh Conservation Area will be protected.

Specific Objectives: In the period up to 2030, Quang Nam Province will focus on the conservation of Ngoc Linh ginseng gene source in the wild in conjunction with forest protection and development, and preservation of biodiversity in the forest ecosystem; invest in the development of Ngoc Linh’s ginseng acreage to approximately 8,400 hectares by 2030, with 100% of Ngoc Linh’s ginseng acreage receiving growing area codes and geographical indications; The production of ginseng will reach around 75 tons/year from 2030 (the acreage is around 250 ha/year), ensuring origin and meeting GACP and WHO (Good Cultivation and Processing Practice) standards.

In addition, the province will invest in the construction of plants for pre-processing and deep processing of Ngoc Linh ginseng products in connection with raw material areas producing in chains, with about 50% of the production plants complying with GMP and WHO quality standards; Construction of a breeding, preservation and development center for high-tech medicinal herbs in Nam Tra My district.

Aiming at the year 2045, Quang Nam Ngoc Province is developing Linh ginseng into an international branded product with high export value, creating an important source of income for the town. The aim is to make Quang Nam an important ginseng export province in the world.

To implement the program by 2045, Quang Nam Province will invest 1,800 billion; Of this, VND 100 billion is earmarked for the research, selection, breeding and production of Ngoc Linh ginseng seeds. VND 300 billion for the development of Ngoc Linh Ginseng Concentrated Raw Material Area; VND250 billion to boost the processing and trade of sustainable Ngoc Linh ginseng products along the value chain; VND 150 billion for building and developing the brand, market, trade promotion and community tourism in combination with introducing the traditional culture of cultivation and use of Vietnamese ginseng; VND 1,000 billion for infrastructure development in Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation area in connection with infrastructure development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Speaking to VnEconomy about the implementation of the Ngoc Linh Ginseng Program, Mr. Ho Quang Buu Vice, Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee, said that the province is ambitious to transform the Ngoc Linh Mountain Forest in Nam Tra My District into the capital of National Ginseng. Quang Nam has set a goal Preserving and developing the source of ginseng seeds and commercial ginseng to further invest in the comprehensive processing of this rare and valuable medicinal herb into pharmaceutical products such as medicines and health products.

According to Mr. Ho Quang Buu, Quang Nam Province has carried out many contents of research, selection and production before the Prime Minister approved the program to develop Vietnamese ginseng by 2030 with a focus on 2045, such as Ngoc Linh ginseng. The province will set up the National Ngoc Linh Ginseng Seed Production Center in Nam Tra My and give priority to developing varieties at Tak Ngo Ginseng Seed Farm, the province’s original ginseng farm, to meet the needs of mass production and supply seedlings for development. Raw material areas average 250ha/year. At the same time, invest in and promote the processing and trade of Ngoc Linh’s sustainable ginseng products along the value chain; Set up Ngoc Linh ginseng traceability system, ensure products with clear origin and put Ngoc Linh ginseng inspection machine system into operation in Nam Tra My region.

“The province mandates related sectors to coordinate with Nam Tra My District to organize community tourism activities that combine the introduction of culture, the tradition of cultivation and the use of Ngoc Linh ginseng in ginseng-growing communities to create a “destination” linked to the development of community tourism villages of Mo Chai, Lang Loan, Tak Ngo, etc. “In the near future, Quang Nam province will invest in Ngoc Linh ginseng breeding farm in Tak Ngo and upgrade it to ensure it can meet seed production needs and reach 500,000 plants per year by 2030,” added Ho Quang Buu.

With strong investment and a long-term development strategy, Ngoc Linh ginseng in Nam Tra My District is expected to have more opportunities for recovery and development, avoiding the risk of extinction due to the indiscriminate exploitation of ginseng in nature for a long period of time, to preserve and develop ginseng seed sources of high economic value, coupled with the protection of virgin forests and watershed forests of Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve in Quang Nam.
