The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is being actively implemented by the people of Quang Ninh Province. This method has helped reduce production costs, reduce the amount of toxic pesticide residues on products, ensure workers’ health, food safety and hygiene, and stabilize the balance.
Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ninh issued a plan to implement the crop IPM program in agricultural production areas, which will be implemented in 12/12 districts, cities and townships in the period from 2021 to 2025.
In 2022, the provincial level organized 7 IPM training courses for farmers with 210 participants (4 courses on rice; 2 courses on corn, 1 course on fruit trees) with a total budget of more than 614.0 million Dong.
At district level, 29 IPM training courses for farmers were organized with 840 participants (on rice 17 classes; vegetables 6 classes; fruit trees 4 classes; medicinal plants and industrial plants 1 class), total 1 class. The implementation cost more than 1.4 billion.
In addition, the country has organized 41 training sessions on technology transfer on cultivation and plant protection, measures on the care and prevention of plant pests and diseases, with 2,050 participants; Districts, cities and communities held 91 classes with 4,242 participants.
In 2022, the province built 10 integrated IPM models in Core Farmer Training Classes (FFS) and a new variety trial model combining IPM with an area of ββ8.64 ha. The municipalities have built 29 models through the learning fields of the IPM training class. Many IPM models are integrated with other farming extensions and programs.
Practical models, application of IPM to crops (rice, vegetables, fruit trees…) in core farmer training courses have brought economic efficiency to the people, which is the basis for the replication and dissemination of the IPM program in the community.
For example, the average yield of rice variety ST25 in some places like Tien Yen District, Hai Ha, Uong Bi City… all reach 55-60 quintals/ha. Rice products are said to have delicious quality and the retail price is 50-70% higher than traditional products.
In addition, models of cultivation of medicinal plants, mixed cultivation of medicinal plants with forest trees are also interested in implementation, such as the model of propagating yellow flower tea by the method of cutting branches to create miniature trees, planting eucalyptus trees interspersed with red ones Medicinal plants ginseng and areca, the cultivation of green iron with ginseng sand in some eastern counties of the province have helped increase production values ββand improve the lives of aborigines.
In particular, the application of IPM helps reduce the frequency of spraying pesticides on crops by 1 to 2 times compared to the areas where the IPM program is not implemented, and the spraying cost from 90,000 to 180,000 VND/sao/plant, equivalent to 2.4 – 4.9 million VND/ha/crop).
In addition, the crop yield increased by an average of 5-10% compared to the area without the IPM program. In particular, minimizing pollution and thereby creating safer agricultural products for consumers.
The IPM model has helped to help farmers gradually change their production mindset toward increasing productivity and product quality, contributing to the protection of human health and ecological environment, advanced science and technology apply and thereby promote sustainable agricultural development.
In 2022, in order to protect the rural environment from agricultural production, provincial departments, branches and municipalities have stepped up the collection and treatment of pesticide packaging after use in the production areas.
By the end of 2022, the volume of post-use pesticide packaging collected is 10,800 kg (of which 3,640 kg has been processed and destroyed; the volume of post-use pesticide packaging has been collected in storage tanks, storage areas awaiting destruction is 7,160 kg).
