According to the Crop Production Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country’s fruit production is estimated at over 2.6 million tons in the second quarter of 2023. Lychee reached 330,000 tons and longan 110,000 tons.
Before many CHALLENGES, GOALS
In 2021, Vietnam’s lychee export turnover will reach US$47.4 million, in 2022 it will reach US$27.4 million (down 42.3%). For longan, export sales will reach US$23,318 million in 2021, reach US$13,893 million in 2022 (down 40.4%).
With the lychee and longan harvest in 2023, export sales are expected to pick up again as the main consuming market China lifted the zero-Covid policy and reopened. The promotion of consumption in other markets is also actively implemented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and related agencies, units, municipalities and companies.
At the “Conference on Trade Promotion of Lychee and Longan Products” on May 31, Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Do Thang Hai said that lychee and longan are the most important fruit trees in the northern provinces, with a total area of about 98, 3 thousand Ha; 27% of the total fruit tree area in the entire region; of which lychee 58.8 thousand hectares, longan 39.5 thousand hectares. These two fruits are also typical representatives of the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry, which is conquering the world market.
Fresh lychee products have been exported to 30 different markets: China, USA, EU, Japan, Korea, countries in ASEAN, Middle East… and will continue to expand. The main consumption market for longan is still domestic, but it was also initially exported to Japan and the EU.
However, Ministry of Industry and Trade executives also said that alongside the benefits, the plentiful supply is putting great pressure on consumption as exports fell sharply in many markets and domestic demand is also limited. The export market is always volatile and has many potential risks, especially for lychee, fresh longan, large concentrated production, short storage and consumption time.
The traditional market and the greatest demand is China, which has ever-increasing demands on quality, quarantine, labelling, packaging and related regulations on traceability, preservation, transport and payment. Mathematics…
In other markets, fabrics and longan, in addition to many strict non-trade barriers, also have to deal with the fact that purchasing power has fallen due to high inflation and efforts to reduce product costs have not been implemented. The trend is for consumer affordability to deteriorate.
Mr. Tran Quang Tan, Director of Bac Giang Ministry of Industry and Commerce, mentioned the difficulty and high cost of transporting lychee by air. Traffic jams still occur at the northern border gates; The capacity to access, negotiate and conclude cooperation between companies and cooperatives is still limited. Lychee is still mainly consumed and exported as fresh lychee…
Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, trade adviser for the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, said that the US market is a very large fruit consumption market. However, to reach this potential market, there are still some obstacles.
In particular, the geographical distance is too large, resulting in a long transit time; There is no US-standard radiation facility in the North. While Vietnam’s main competitor is China, Mexico has a lot of experience, an extensive distribution system, competitive prices and low shipping costs.
TRADE TO PROMOTE THE ROLE OF MARKET CONNECTION
In 2023, Deputy Minister Do Thang Hai proposed some radical solutions to work with communities to boost consumption, boost exports and contribute to a prosperous lychee and longan harvest.
First, diversification of export markets and products, and diversification of traditional and modern sales channels, including cross-border e-commerce, are still effective solutions in the short and long term.
“Keeping up the development of the traditional market means that China has not only access to border areas, but also access to inland provinces/cities, which have a lot of space for exploitation.” At the same time, maximum efforts should be made to keep the market close of ASEAN, using cost and transportation time to achieve reasonable prices and increase market share. For potential but demanding markets such as the United States, EU, Japan, Australia, etc., a methodical approach is required to segment high-end products with an emphasis on quality, food safety, and processing technology. Variables and Brands,” Deputy Minister Hai suggested.
Second, export support measures must be timely and practical. Accordingly, we continue to be good at providing market information, trade policy, standards and regulations on imported products, demand, consumer tastes, and key factor predictive information. Factors affecting the competitiveness of Vietnamese lychee and longan products.
