Sweet potato prices are rising

Gia Lai currently has a total area of nearly 5,000 hectares of sweet potatoes, mainly in Phu Thien, Ia Pa, Krong Pa, Chu Se, Chu Puh, Dak Doa, Ia Grai, Chu Prong and Mang Yang districts.

Taken in the “capital” of yam Phu Thien, this time is nearing the end of the harvest, the price of yam is rising, helping people enjoy a bounty harvest.

Mr. Do Van Nam, director of Phu Thien Safe Agricultural Cooperative (Chu A Thai Commune, Phu Thien District) said happily that the price of sweet potatoes is currently fluctuating around VND13,000/kg, the yield is also relatively high this year. reach over 30 t/ha. Without the investment costs, people earn a profit of over 250 million VND/ha. Compared to other crops, sweet potatoes are much more profitable, and the time from planting to harvest is a little over 3 months.

According to Mr. Nam, it’s possible that in the past, information about China’s approval of official exports of Vietnamese sweet potatoes helped push up potato prices. A sustainable price of VND 8,000/kg is also exciting for sweet potato producers.

Mr. Nam added that about 1,200 ha of sweet potatoes are currently being cultivated in Phu Thien district. Accordingly, sweet potato crops are planted 1 crop per year, and then rotated to grow rice and crops to reduce pests and diseases. At present, many enterprises have come to Phu Thien to ask questions on planting land building regulations, linking product consumption, and stabilizing prices for people. However, when creating the planting area codes, companies also ask for the application of plants to ensure year-round supply of goods to the export market.

“We are developing a growing area code for members with around 200 ha, of which Ia Sol parish is 120 ha and Chu A Thai parish is 80 ha. Accordingly, companies are stepping out to coordinate with communities, the Department of Cultivation and Crop Protection to help people develop planting area codes, while cooperatives are introducing planting areas to meet established requirements,” said Mr. Year of Sharing .

According to Mr. Nam, Phu Thien district has the advantage of having the largest wet rice storage in Gia Lai province. Therefore, going through a rice crop will remove any disease-causing nematodes, and then returning to sweet potatoes will ensure good plant growth. This is very convenient for the locality in developing the planting area code without having to change the planting land location for the planting area.

Excited by the news that yams are officially exported to China, Thang Loi Agricultural Cooperative (Ia Sol Municipality, Phu Thien District) has been focusing on soliciting members to register areas and an application for a cultivation area code in recent days deliver.

Mr. Tong Van Hien, deputy director of Thang Loi Agricultural Cooperative, said the cooperative is currently farming 240 ha of its members’ sweet potatoes in Ia Sol Municipality. For official export to China, cooperative members have registered to set up a growing area number of almost 150 ha. Currently, companies have measured the area, and the technical process of cultivation will be implemented in the next harvest.

“Registration of area codes for growing sweet potatoes will be more convenient for people who produce this crop sustainably. Price in particular is a recurring issue that gives people headaches when they are pressured by traders. Therefore, helping companies to develop the cultivation area code, then consume products and stabilize prices will help people feel safe in production,” Mr. Hien said.

Help farmers learn about growing area codes and export regulations

In the past, Gia Lai’s agribusiness has always accompanied, supported and guided farmers, cooperatives and companies to promote the establishment and development of terroir codes and packaging plants for agricultural products in general and potatoes in particular for export.

In particular, with the news that sweet potatoes are officially exported through China, Gia Lai’s agricultural industry has stepped up and synchronously implemented many solutions to raise awareness of relevant organizations and individuals.

Priority should be given to coordinating and promoting propaganda through activities such as: guiding the process of establishing and monitoring codes for growing areas and packing plants; Organization of training for managers of growing areas and packaging plants on regulations and criteria related to the establishment, construction, inspection and monitoring of regulations for growing areas, packaging plants …

In addition, Gia Lai Province also disseminates the import regulations of the markets, especially the regulations on plant quarantine and food safety.

Mr. Do Van Nam, director of the Phu Thien Safe Agricultural Cooperative, said that the members of the cooperative are also very interested in the selection of varieties in preparation for the issuance of the growing area codes. Accordingly, the best variety is selected for high yield and quality. Sweet potatoes in particular are organically produced to ensure healthy plants, yield and high quality.

Mr. Tong Van Hien, deputy director of Thang Loi Agricultural Cooperative, said the cooperative and households have received much training on the process of developing the cultivation area code in recent times. In fact, when creating the code for planting areas that people find beneficial, people will immediately go along with it. The price of sweet potato doesn’t have to be too high, but it has to be stable so that people can feel safe in the production.

According to Mr. Hien, the sweet potato has grown relatively rapidly in Phu Thien district in recent years, bringing in hundreds of millions of dongs on average each year. Therefore, the sustainable development of sweet potato crops through the development of growing area codes is of particular interest to many households in the region.

Nguyen Anh Tuan, vice chairman of the Phu Thien District People’s Committee, said that in order for sweet potatoes to be officially exported to China, the place has also registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai Province for the use of export communities develop codes for Planting areas with a total area of over 300 hectares.

“With the registration of the cultivation area code, sweet potatoes will become more convenient because they will be officially exported, then the price will also go up,” said Mr. Tuan, saying that to do it now, people need to change the changing cultivation methods. Applying technology, building a sustainable sweet potato value chain.

Mr. Tran Xuan Khai, director of Plant Protection and Cultivation Subdivision of Gia Lai, said Gia Lai Province has now been allocated 146 growing area codes, of which sweet potatoes have just been approved by the General Administration of Customs of China for 18 growing primaries.

According to Mr. Khai, the cultivation area code is an important requirement for the official export of sweet potatoes, which helps shorten the intermediate stages, improve value-added and economic efficiency, and ensure a stable yield for the citizen. This contributes to the development of production in the direction of central goods, linking sustainable value chains.

Mr. Tran Xuan Khai, head of the Cultivation and Crop Protection Subdivision of Gia Lai Province, said that because of inspection and practical work on the grassroots, many farmers and even cooperatives are afraid to practice the cultivation area code, there is also the idea of ”self producing, self-selling”, resulting in most of the acreage being scattered, small, intercropping…

“In general, the criteria and regulations of the market that consume a lot of water have not been met, especially the cultivation logging and the application of the same production process, so it is difficult to promote the facility and develop the planting area code,” Mr. Khai informed .
