According to Dong Thap Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the whole province has so far basically completed the harvest of the 2022-2023 winter-spring crop and is currently focusing on the production of the 2023 summer-autumn rice crop, with a sown area of over 181,000 hectares. So far, 16% of the sown area has been harvested.
In the summer-autumn harvest, the emphasis continued to be on expanding the rice acreage and applying advanced cultivation techniques to reduce production costs, which made important results against the backdrop of high production costs and high prices. Production costs vary in the order of 3,268 – 3,643 VND/kg. The rice consumption situation is assured, the price of high-quality rice has increased slightly compared to the previous month. As a result, farmers can earn profits of VND 21-24 million/ha from rice cultivation (an increase of VND 5.5-8.1 million/ha compared to the same period last year).
In addition, in Dong Thap’s summer-autumn harvest, 10,374 hectares were sown with crops and short-term industrial plants. The selling price of most crops has increased more than before.
As for the fruit trees, the area continued to be tended and expanded in the spirit of restructuring the agricultural sector, with a size of almost 43,000 hectares. The fruit consumption situation is stable, the cost of production has increased from 161 to 2,160 VND/kg, but still ensures the farmers get a profit equal or higher than the same period last year.
As far as animal production is concerned, the situation is relatively stable, diseases in livestock are being combated well. Conditions in the fishing industry are still more favorable than in the first months of the year, most aquaculture households have made positive profits thanks to increased sales prices, thus contributing to the maintenance and expansion of the farmed area, which is estimated by the end of the year. In May 2023, 4,192 ha were reached (up 2% over the same period). Total harvested seafood production reached 175,937 tons (up 3% over the same period), of which pangasius production increased by 7%.
