Mr. Truong Hoang Phuong of Phu Thuan A Hamlet, Nhon Phu Municipality (Mang Thit District, Vinh Long) is known to his relatives by the familiar name of Sau Thuong, a billionaire farmer who started with a 1.5 ha model Ido Longan ( Eda) ). He is also the deputy hamlet manager, head of the hamlet farmers’ association and enthusiastically helps people.
From brick kiln owner to billionaire label Ido
Mr. Sau Thuong said before he got into farming, he was a brick kiln owner. Seeing that this profession was quite difficult, mainly the exploitation of clay resources, no long-term plan, with available farmland, he tried his best to study, research models and plant gardens for economic development.
Before starting his work, he continuously visited and studied effective models in Dong Thap Province, Chanh An Municipality (Mang Thit District) for more than a year. Wherever he went, he worked hard to learn, drawing on the successful experiences of his predecessors. He said that in agricultural production you shouldn’t follow the movement, if you see everyone doing what they are doing, you will be broken.
As far as he knows, Ido has been growing longan for almost 30 years, but many people criticize it for its low price, on the contrary, he thinks that this crop has a high yield and low investment costs, so it will compensate for the limitation on the price. Because the Ido label is easy to care for, less sprayed, only difficult in the flowering phase, but learn to pay attention and understand quickly, very easy. Above all, the longan tree has a long life, long-term edible life, suitable for this country. Therefore, in 2017, he decided to select the Ido Longan tree for economic development.
In order to build an effective model, he went to Chanh An Township in Mang Thit District to visit Mr. Tam Liep’s model of cultivating Ido Longan. Thanks to Mr. Tam’s enthusiastic sharing of experiences from planting, sowing, tending to handling flowers… so he was reasonably confident to do so.
First, he planted a trial with an area of about 5 workers (5,000 m2). Model for planting 40 trees/public. When he saw the effect, he started multiplying it by 10. So far, Longan produces very high yields after 3 harvests, each tree weighs 100 kg or more, about 40 tons/ha on average. Selling price ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 VND/kg less about 10% of cost, earning nearly 1 billion VND every year.
He lovingly said, “My model has always been successful since it was implemented because I listened to people’s advice. When choosing a model, you need to work hard. Strength here is not only the strength and technical care, but also the financial investment ability. So if I don’t see anyone doing something, I run after them.”
Mr. Thuong’s Ido Longan garden is very scientifically designed, the landscape is kept clean, the trees are pruned to form a canopy regularly. Besides, he also applied the mechanization of irrigation by sprinkler irrigation system, so it is very easy to maintain. Currently, his garden has been nominated by the Nhon Phu Municipality People’s Committee as a model garden, which is supported by the Mang Thit District Agricultural Sector to develop into a model orchard of the district.
It is also good to be an agricultural adviser
In the country of Nhon Phu, people traditionally pursued the profession of ceramic tile in the past. Those who have little capital build kilns, those who have no capital work as wage labourers. As for agriculture, the peasants work in the fields to eat rice, let alone get rich, so no one follows them.
Then the craft of ceramic bricks in Mang Thit country met many difficulties, the brick kilns also became smokeless and dull. Workers who used to live in this job mostly change jobs to work in other countries or industrial zones to become manual workers.
Sau Thuong is a name loved by the people of the hamlet not only for its gentle temperament, but also for its enthusiasm, willingness to share experiences and production techniques and help those around to rise in life. .
After building a successful model, Mr. Sau Thuong is very enthusiastic about sharing his experiences and techniques with the surrounding farmers. Above all, as head of the farmers’ association, deputy head of the hamlet, he mobilized people to renovate mixed gardens together. In which 5 models of cultivation of Ido Longan have been replicated with an area of about 5 hectares, thanks to learning from Mr.
For example, Mr. Duong Van Phuoc’s family has 13 acres of garden land to grow longan and beef pepper. Since the longan was destroyed by the dragon broom, the garden is no longer effective. Thanks to Mr. Thuong’s experience sharing, he switched to the effective model of growing 3 Ido Longans 5 years ago. So far, Mr. Phuoc has harvested 2 crops each with a profit of 15 million VND/person. A year ago he proceeded to convert the remaining 10 workers to grow all the Ido Longans.
“I remember the first batch, the yield was more than 2 tons/ton, the price was 12,000 VND/kg, the profit was 15 million VND/work. I’m glad to see it achieve that. So far there have been 2 seasons in which an effective new development could be seen. Thanks to Mr. Thuong for technical assistance, fertilizers and medicines, I was not familiar with where I could not plant it before,” said Mr. Tam Phuoc.
Commenting on Mr. Sau Thuong’s model and working style, Mr. Nguyen Tan Toi, Vice Chairman of Farmers’ Union of Nhon Phu Township, Mang Thit District, said: “Mr. Sau Thuong’s model of cultivating Ido Longan is the first model. from Phu Thuan A hamlet. Currently he supports seedlings and techniques for many people to develop this model. Sharing the process of planting, taking care of the care, sharing the time of handling to produce delicious fruit, avoiding the harvest”.
Although he has only joined social work in recent years, Mr. Sau Thuong’s enthusiasm and concern has not belied the fact that he has been trusted by the hamlet’s farmers and elected President of the Farmers’ Union. A year ago he was elected Deputy Mayor. He recently had the honor of being voted in the top 100 good farmer nationally.
According to Mr. Toi, whenever there are training courses on production techniques, the place creates favorable conditions for Mr. Sau Thuong to participate in training and study tours. In addition, he researched and contacted gardeners to learn more. In particular, he has now applied the method of composting fish manure to fertilize longan trees very effectively, and at the same time, he also wholeheartedly teaches this technique, which helps to save costs in agriculture.
“Mr. Thuong has always been the leader in guiding local farmers to learn production techniques. He is the focal point for transferring technical learning and mobilizing people to effectively transform mixed gardens. There used to be a lot of mixed gardens in this area, now there are no mixed gardens, all specialized gardens. Every household grows fruit trees such as durian, jackfruit, longan… of high economic value,” confirmed Mr. Nguyen Tan Toi, vice chairman of Nhon Phu Township Farmers’ Association.
Currently, Nhon Phu Township is one of the places with ceramic tile villages under Mang Thit Contemporary Heritage Project. Besides Ido longan, Mr. Thuong also planted many other longan species like purple longan, canoe longan… Besides, he also planted thien-ly flowers and released many kinds of fish in the pond (earth, carp, snapper, fish ).grass carp) and breed more black apple snails.
Mr. Sau Thuong harbors plans to turn his garden into an ecotourism destination with a desire to create a new wind as an ecotourism profession and create more jobs for local farmers.
Sharing his work with farmers to get rich, Mr. Sau Thuong said, “I help them with the basics like stratification, weave, drainage… first, then with technical issues. Take care of that. There are households I need to bring to handle the spray bottle, direct instruction, I managed, but I know how to share what love is!” Mr. Sau confided in Thuong.
