If you can’t tell a sling from a sling, this is the article for you. Both are used to move objects, but they have very different uses.
Some people use the terms lifting strap and lifting sling interchangeably. In fact, however, they are two different tools with two different applications.
A lifting belt is also known as a treadmill. This type of movement aid can be used to help people – usually a team of two – lift heavy objects. These straps can be a lifesaver when moving in and out of a dorm, especially if you are moving yourself. Professional movers also use them in place of a traditional wheeled dolly because there are certain places where you don’t want to roll a dolly through a house. For example, you might not want to roll a trolley across white carpet or fragile tile floors. There may also be pieces of furniture or equipment that are not suitable for being moved with a trolley. A movable strap is usually fastened around both people’s shoulders and/or hips to provide stability and help you handle the heavy object. You’ll be surprised how many items can be lifted this way, including washing machines, dryers, closets, refrigerators, sofas and more.
A lifting sling is generally used in an industrial or marine environment to lift or hoist very heavy equipment such as boats, trucks and construction machinery. They are made from a variety of materials designed for specific applications including nylon, polyester, wire rope and chain. Nylon types are the most common choice. Chain type are the strongest option. All types are rated by the manufacturer for a variety of load factors and you must be careful to purchase the correct hoist for your load. The slings are usually connected to the crane or whatever is used for the pull with a shackle or other type of industrial fastener.
Whether you call it slings or slings, most sales professionals can figure out what you’re really looking for. The most important thing is to ask questions so you can get the right tool for the job you need to do.
