First training program
In recent years, the pet market (mainly dogs, cats and ornamental birds) in Vietnam has tended to grow, especially in developed provinces and cities.
According to statistics from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, the country will have 8 million domestic dogs and 2 million domestic cats by 2022. Vietnam’s pet care industry revenue accounts for 13% (equivalent to $500 million) in Southeast Asia.
As the pet industry grows, the demand for human resources from pet veterinarians who are highly skilled in this field is becoming scarce.
According to the 2022 survey data, the demand for specialist veterinarians for pets in the period 2022 – 2027 mainly relates to 2 subject groups. Of these, veterinary clinics and hospitals (54%), animal husbandry and veterinary medicine companies (44%), the rest (7%) are government agencies.
Since then, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry – Veterinary Medicine of Thailand’s Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry has developed a training program aimed at enabling learners to practice skills in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of animal diseases upon graduation, or to implement self-intensive business models .
By 2023, Thailand’s Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry will pioneer pet-specialized veterinary training program (official system). This is a discipline that first appeared in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine educational institutions in Vietnam.
Accordingly, the training duration of the program is more than 4 years in the form of learning credits. The scope of enrollment is nationwide, the subjects are high school graduates, based on the grades in the Abitur 2023, achieving the entrance quality grade determined and announced by the university in accordance with the regulations.
