Nghia Hiep Township (Tu Nghia District, Quang Ngai) is the largest Tet flower basket in the central region with more than 500 households engaged in floriculture. Every year, this place provides tens of thousands of flower pots to serve the Lunar New Year market. This year’s Tet flower harvest, flower growers here are very excited, if the selling price is high, the garden owner will have great profit.
With just over a week to go until Tet, the flower village of Nghia Hiep is busier than ever these days. A hustle and bustle can be seen along the streets of the parish as people are busy tending the family flower garden in preparation for delivery to traders for consumption.
While pruning flower pots in the garden, Mr. Le Van Nong (resident in Nghia Hiep Township, Tu Nghia District) said that this year his family planted more than 2,000 flower pots of all kinds, including about 1,000 pots of chrysanthemums are evening primrose, dahlia, marigold … According to Mr. Nong, this year’s weather has been relatively favorable for the growth of flowering plants for the past 3 years.
“Since the harvest season, there are few storms and pests to affect the trees, so most of the flower gardens in the municipality are green, the flower pots are uniform and beautiful. Thanks to this, both my flower garden and other households in the area were tended by traders from provinces such as Quang Nam, Da Nang and Quang Ngai. Of course, they booked the deposit in advance,” said Mr. Nong happily.
Garden owners in Nghia Hiep said getting the flowers to bloom on the occasion of Tet is the most important thing to sell quickly and get a good price. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and hire people who regularly and carefully fertilize and care for them. When the leaves are green, the plants are even in the pot, and the flowers are blooming, they are favored by the market and sold at a higher price. Although the price of fertilizers has increased by more than 20% this year, chrysanthemums sell well and the purchase price is high, so all flower growers are profitable.
Mr. Truong Minh Duc (resident in Nghia Hiep Township, Tu Nghia District) shared, “At this year’s Tet harvest, my family planted more than 1,000 pots of chrysanthemums. So far, all these flowers have been bought by traders, and in a few days they will come and take them away. Compared to the previous year, the average price per pot is around 30% higher, and the beautiful pot is 40% higher. After deducting all expenses, I made a profit of almost 200 million Dong.
In this chrysanthemum village, there are chrysanthemum pots of different sizes and prices to meet the needs of each customer. Flower pots with a diameter of 70 cm are sold at 300,000-500,000 VND/pot, 50,000-60,000 VND more than last year; Chrysanthemum pots with a diameter of 1 m or more cost VND 2-3 million/pot, VND 500-600 thousand more than last year.
Huynh Trong Hieu, a trader from Quang Nam province, said he went to flower growers in Quang Ngai to see flowers and made a deposit to buy Tet flowers. Mr. Hieu plans to buy about 400 pots of chrysanthemums this year, along with many other flowers such as dahlias and roses, to sell at the provincial market.
“I mainly buy small pots, so compared to other years, the price will increase by about 40,000 VND/pot. The reason for the increase in flower prices this year is due to increased investment costs for fertilizers, pesticides and labor hires, so gardeners have increased flower prices compared to every year,” said Mr. Hieu.
According to Mr. Pham Van Tan, Deputy Chairman of Nghia Hiep Municipality People’s Committee, the entire municipality is estimated to have more than 10,000 flower pots of all kinds such as chrysanthemums, roses, dahlias, etc. this year. Traders have now come to their home, flower garden, to deposit money to buy flowers. Currently, more than 80% of people’s flowers are deposited by merchants. Therefore, the local people are happy because the Tet flower harvest is good and the price is good.
On January 6, Nghia Hieu Flower Village received a certificate of recognition of the collective mark “Hoa Nghia Hiep” from the National Intellectual Property Office (Ministry of Science and Technology). This is the first time that Quang Ngai has given this recognition to a flower village. Nghia Hiep Flower Village was established more than 50 years ago with hundreds of households growing flowers and earning quite a high income. Annual revenue from ornamental flowers in Nghia Hiep Municipality is about VND 30 billion. Currently, this commune has established a cooperative group for flower production; registered OCOP products for Hoa Nghia Hiep brand.
