At this time, many mango farmers in Dong Thap province enter the harvesting season. Although mango prices are at a low level, organic mango plantations, VietGAP in Cao Lanh District and Cao Lanh City still maintain high prices and stable production.
Mr. Nguyen Van Mach, Vice Chairman of Minh Tam Assembly Hall (My Xuong Township, Cao Lanh District), said, “Currently, Cat Chu mangoes in the market cost VND10,000/kg, but the mangoes from his garden are sold for VND15,000 /kg sold .. but still not enough goods to supply customers thanks to organic cultivation from the “My Mango Tree” model.
According to Mr. Mach, the model “My family’s mango tree” has been implemented by his family since 2016 according to VietGAP standards with clear proof of origin. Therefore, customers can always rest assured of food safety and hygiene. Mr. Mach’s My Mango Tree model is bought by customers as a package priced at VND 7 million/mango tree/year, the garden owner commits to supply customers about 100 kg of mangoes/year (2 harvests). the price varies from time to time, but about 5,000 VND/kg higher than the outdoor market.
The entire Dong Thap province has more than 14,000 hectares of specialized mango cultivation, accounting for 33.7% of the province’s total fruit tree area. The main mango varieties include Cat Chu, Hoa Loc Sand, Green Skin Statue… Currently, most gardeners are gradually using organic fertilizers and most of them are packaging their fruit to reduce the use of pesticides.
In order to meet the needs of the mango export market, the province has nearly 8,230 hectares of mangoes with registered growing area codes, with 296 codes, and 9 packers in the region have registered pack numbers. Of these, 33 organizations and individuals received VietGAP certification for mango trees covering 353 ha.
Currently, Dong Thap mangoes are exported to the US market, opening up great potential for the Dong Thap mango industry in particular and for Vietnamese mangoes in general. Besides the United States, Dong Thap’s fresh mangoes are also exported to Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand… especially China, which consumes large quantities of mangoes.
