The problem with many air bed reviews out there today, whether printed or online (or both), is that they typically rely on test studies conducted over the course of just a night or two. Everyone knows that, especially with air beds, this is not a sufficient time horizon to reasonably assess the benefits of the mattresses. It can often take longer just to find the right setting or inflation level for a particular sleeper. Because of this, it may make more sense to judge things based on people’s long-term ratings, say on Amazon or a similar “owner”-specific rating base.

While many good publications have conducted their own studies in recent years, they often end up comparing divergent model types. For example, it’s not that helpful to compare an airbed that’s specifically designed for camping to an airbed that’s made for the home. Especially if the home use is for everyday use (which will likely be reflected in a higher price tag) then you can bet it far outperforms just a disposable air mattress RV. But of course that doesn’t mean that the better rated is what you want. If all you are looking for is a bed that you can use a few times a year when your family goes camping, why consider a full frame mattress? The fact is, you wouldn’t; Now would you even think about buying one that is very high tech. Outdoors, we’re all much less demanding, with the exception of the occasional princess and pea.

For this reason, I prefer the opinions of air bed owners to mere paid reviewers. By talking to long-time owners, you can get a much better sense of how the mattress will perform over a long (and realistic) period of time. These people usually have their air mattresses inflated to just the right level. They report if it’s holding its breath well or needs to be “revived” every few days (or even more frequently). Typically, a manufacturer like Aerobed that is an industry leader gets the best ratings. That’s not to say they’re the undisputed winners, but they certainly have the largest market share. Other companies are also starting to get into this space and will certainly make their own qualitative contribution to the development of the air beds.
