According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Egypt reached just US$569,000 in October 2022, down 41% from the same period last year. However, thanks to strong growth in the first 5 months of the year, 10-month tuna exports were still up 17% to nearly $13.5 million.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, Egypt is currently Vietnam’s 13th largest tuna export market and the second largest in the Middle East after Israel.
Vietnam is currently the second largest tuna supplier to Egypt after Thailand. Currently, Vietnam mainly exports processed and canned tuna products to this market. As the price of tuna imported from Thailand tends to increase and to reduce dependence on supplies from that country, Egyptian importers are currently turning to buying tuna from other sources such as Indonesia, Vietnam or China.
