Videoke is a very popular form of entertainment in the Philippines. An entertainment where amateur singers, or just anyone who wants to try singing, sing to recorded music using a microphone. On video, the original singers’ voice is removed or muted and the lyrics are shown with appropriate moving cursors and changing text colors for easy following of the song. These serve as a guide to successfully deliver the song. It can be a simple television with a player attached, or a video machine where you press the appropriate buttons to enter the number of your song and then play it.
It has become so famous that you can find videoke bars everywhere. In my city, my colleagues and I usually go to a videoke bar on our days off. The bar has more than 5 rooms of different sizes. Each is an air-conditioned room containing the TV with 2 microphones, sofas and table. The rooms are intended for small to large groups of people. Drinks and appetizers are also served. In the Philippines, appetizers or “pulutan” go well with beer and similar beverages. Prices are hourly, so you can sing as much as you want, as long as you’re willing to put the mic down when your time is up! lol
Another scenario in the Philippines for a videoke is simply in the homes of Filipinos where families gather for an occasion. I should say that I also have fun and pleasant memories from singing on Videoke with my family. In some shopping centers you can also find Videoke as part of the recreation area. Videoke is not only for those who have the golden voice, but for everyone who just wants to enjoy every precious moment.
