Vietnam’s seafood imports to the US have risen sharply this year, and Vietnam is also among the largest suppliers of seafood to this market.

According to the Department of Import and Export (Department of Industry and Commerce), information from the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) shows that in the first nine months of 2022, Vietnam became the third largest supplier of seafood in terms of volume and ranked 5th in value for the United States and reached 244.4 thousand tons worth $1.78 billion, an increase of 14% in volume and 33.1% in value over the same period in 2021 months 2021 to 9.6 % in 9 months 2022.

This year, US seafood imports started falling from July compared to the same period in 2021. However, due to a sharp increase in imports in the first 4 months of the year, US seafood imports remained flat in the first 9 months of 2022, increasing by 4.9% in volume and 14.2% in value compared to the same period in year 2021 and reached 2.59 million tons worth 23.6 billion USD.

Shrimp is the US’s highest import volume and value fish product. In the first nine months of 2022, US shrimp imports reached 690.2 thousand tons worth US$7.34 billion, down 0.6% in volume but up 1.8% in value compared to the same period in 2021. Vietnam is also one of the largest exporters of shrimp to the US.
