According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), statistics from the European Statistics Agency (Eurostat) show that Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable imports to the EU reached 24,000 tons in the first four months of 2022, out of 24,000 tons in the Value of 24,000 tons worth 62.5 million euros (equivalent to 63 million USD), an increase of 7.6% in volume and 29% in value compared to the same period in 2021.
The average import price of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables has been at a high level, reaching 2,625 EUR/ton, up 20% compared to the same period in 2021.
EU with 27 member countries, more than 500 million inhabitants and a large import requirement for fruit and vegetable products. EU imports of fruit and vegetables reached 28.7 million tons worth 39.5 billion euros (equivalent to 40 billion USD) in the first 4 months of 2022.
However, imports from Vietnam accounted for just under 0.1% of the EU’s total fruit and vegetable imports in the first four months of 2022, and Vietnam currently ranks 43rd among the markets supplying fruit and vegetables to the EU. Therefore, there are still many opportunities for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable companies to enter the EU market in the coming period.
The EU market places very high demands on traceability and product quality standards, especially food safety and hygiene. As a result, companies need to learn and capture information about the market, from consumer tastes to regulations and standards on rules of origin, food safety and hygiene.
